The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

I mean really....why the **** would anyone need to pull the body off to take a motor out?? I can't wrap my head around that at ALL.

And I thought it was kind of extreme to have to pull the motor or drop the subframe (pulling the motor being easier) to change the oil pan on the Powerstrokes...

It's actually not that bad of a job though. I had to replace the frame of a Trailblazer a few years ago...lol

How about building your own frame? How hard would that be? I asked the guy painting my truck (since he does full body off frame restos and has built several cars from the ground up) and he said it wasn't really a big deal. I think "not a big deal" to him and "not a big deal" to us is a wee bit different. :D

Man, hopefully everything goes back together peacefully on your brother's truck! I'd be a nervous wreck if that was my truck, and it's worth a fraction of what his is!

Speaking of said truck, when the **** is yours getting done? Last time I was at Josh's, there were parts of that thing everywhere.

Well, the work itself isn't that big of a deal...it's just cutting metal tubing, and welding it together. I think the hard part would be in the design process itself! I don't think building a frame is as simple as lining up some angles like a ladder and welding it all together. lol

I'm pretty sure it's getting painted this week. He said last week or this week he'd be able to get to it, and this guy is actually on the ball, not like the last guy that was flaky as heck. I'll call him if I don't hear from him. I hope it should all be wrapped up by the end of the month, if all goes smoothly (which I'm sure it won't, realistically).

Yeah, I was reading about it a bit, and guys were saying that they have big jigs that cross load the frame or something as it's being welded to deal with warpage. I haven't reached that point yet, where I know how to deal with things like that. I have a picture from a FSM of the frame, and there are about a bazillion measurements on it. It hurts just to look at it, mainly because both wheelbases are on the same picture, so about every measurement has two numbers.

Yeah Josh I don't blame your brother at all for flipping out about that.

Damn Josh!!! I feel bad for your brother! I would flip out if that happened to me. Hope everything turns out all right!

Yeah. You should see the jig they use when fabricating the boiler tube walls. I got to see it while in Beijing. Didn't get to take any pics of it, but it was about the size of the Bedford Winking Lizard bar and dining room area put together.

I am pretty sure I would have my attorney give someone a call. There is no way that a service manual says to remove body from chassis for engine work. Total bulls***!

It's taken Wes over a week to order 4 bolts to mount his engine to the engine stand. His swap will take about 14 years to complete. lulz.

"What's that, you have a engine problem. Hmmmm... Lets just take off the whole shell and jingle out all this extra pocket change for ya" I would have been furious, not upset. I couldn't imagine the thoughts running through my head if I saw my trans am or MSP like that.

This was my response to all the guys on that site who are still pro-keeping the truck because this "isn't a big deal".

The fact of the matter here is, once he gets it back, and after knowing the extent of the work that was done, ALL of his senses are going to be on full alert. Meaning, any hint of a noise, squeak, rattle, electrical glitch, funny shift, 50 RPM drop in idle, tiny miss under acceleration, any little thing he feels isn't normal from before all this happened....is going to drive him absolutely nuts with concern. It's going to be like the Tell Tale Heart, a constant reminder in the back of his mind about what happened to his truck, that could eventually push him over the edge.

It's the same thing with people getting rid of their cars after a major collision, a common thought is that "it's never going to be the same". We (most reputable shops at least) certainly do our best in returning the vehicle to pre-accident condition, but the only thing that matters is how YOU feel about your car when you get it back. I can't tell you how many times people bring their cars back for things that are CLEARLY unrelated to the accident, but all of a sudden they notice it because they're on full tilt after getting their car back, and we're forced to repair it to make them happy.

Like he said, he could trust me to do the job right since I'm his brother, but some random kid (dude's younger than him) at a dealership where they only get 2 SS's in to work on (and only routine maintenance until this extensive job), it's not hard to see where he's coming from. I still don't think he's going to pick it up, and drive straight to another dealership to immediately trade it in, but I wouldn't blame him if he did. lol There's a lot to be said about having a vehicle that's untouched in this respect. A certain "feeling" you have knowing that your pride and joy hasn't been under the care of a total stranger in it's lifetime.

If that doesn't make sense.....let me ask you guys this, would you buy a vehicle even though you knew it was in an accident that took it to the brink of totaling it? Would you pay $20,000 for this SS, knowing that it's been disassembled to this point, AND had to have the motor rebuilt at only 42,000 miles? Or would you keep looking for a vehicle that's still in factory form? :undecided:

FSM on the Bavaria instructs you to remove the subframe and drop the engine rather than pull it up. I've seen some crazy s*** in FSM's.

I dunno.. If you use a lift and have a way to remove the body from the frame, it's probably easier than trying to wiggle the V8 out of the small engine bay.
