How vital is using the "correct" oil filter?

I remember using the filter for the KL V6 on the MSP because it was slightly larger. The Escape and 6 have the same engine but the 6 has a fat, short oil filter that barely fits between the subframe & exhaust and can be frustrating. And it's almost never in stock. The Escape filter is slightly slimmer and longer but the seals are the exact same size. I'm going to assume thread pitch is the same as well.

Not saying it's the case here but oil filters have a variety of bypass pressures tailored to the application. If there's some way to check, I'd verify the two have the same bypass pressure before using one on the other.

I would say pretty important. You can do some cross reference but sometimes the threads can be close enough to screw on, but not exactly right. That could possibly come loose. Also, there are specs that different oil filters have for bypass, etc. If you look up the technical specs and compare it to what the car calls for, then size differences are fine, but the other specs should be close.

edit: but since you say they are the same engine, they would most likely work. I'm actually surprised a car with the same engine calls for a different oil filter.

after pulling them up on Napa's website, the only specs other than filter size that is different in the Flow Rate. 10-12 gpm on the Escape and 11-13 gpm on the 6. Not a huge difference but I'm sure a difference for a reason.

The short and stubby is required because there is barely enough space between the filter and the front manifold to get it off.

I use a larger capacity filter on my ms3. Motorcraft brand. Allows me to use a full 6 qts without overfilling vs. 5.7qt on the recommended size

The Escape filter is that much longer that it wouldn't fit, just would be easier to get past the exhaust & sub-frame.

That's what I did with the MSP, I think it only took 4 qts.

Wix filters has a nice cross reference and spec section on their site. I use a filter from a ford ranger on our 3, it is taller (more capacity) but every other aspect of the filter is the same.

Thanks to college life I'm mostly nocturnal with my posts on here, but I am not excited for winter. My tires are getting pretty low on tread and I'm too poor to buy a decent pair of snow shoes, thank God I park on campus and I have no where I need to go. I'm just ready to graduate and get a job, I still have 3 years left though...
