The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

LOL, me? Baller? Must be some new bastard in here that took my name.

I'm sorry, but this pisses me off. I'm sure the company is not paying you to just sit around and browse the Internet, they have provided you with an opportunity to see what it is like to work in the engineering field, ideally so you can figure out if you like it or not while you provide a service for them. What are the problems?

- You need to take more initiative, if they don't give you work then either ask for it, look for it, analyze current or previous work or just shadow someone that works there full time so you can see what they have to deal with on a daily basis. Besides money, you should be there to learn and figure out what to do with your life.

- If they're not giving you anything to do for whatever reason, then you are working for another dumbass manager. Unfortunately, you fill find those in a lot of places, and from my experience you should make it known so changes can take place or just look for another company. That just gives me the impression that the quality of work from that company is really bad so as an Engineer, I would stay way. This is why I was 'let go' of my previous job, I told management how bad of a job other people were doing, and they didn't like it. I have high standards and I take pride in my work, so I don't like stupid people getting in my way and making me look bad.

Its really sad to see people bitching about the opportunities they have and not taking advantage of them. There are plenty of people who would love to be in your shoes, not because they want to buy parts for their car but because they need to provide for their families.

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, so pretty much I know how to do what Phen does. I could be making as much or more than he does (I'm older) and have a much better financial stability. Why don't I do it? Because I don't like it. How did I figure that out? With an internship, asking questions, shadowing people, figuring things out on my own.

/end rant

what about what i said implied that im not trying to get work, or make work, or learn? every time i get an assignment i do it, and i ask a lot of questions to know how to do it better next time. I go all over the office and see if there is anyone who needs something done. I bug my manager and coworkers for something to do. just because im not doing work, and because im sitting on the internet most of the day, doesnt mean that im not trying to make the most of my opportunity.

This is not a bad company. we are expanding rapidly. right now 45 employees, when i got here a month a go there were 40. in 1 year they expect to be in a new building with 75 employees.

Dont tell me to take more initiative. I take as much as i possibly can.

ajkulish, what kind of engineer/engineering student are you?

Edit: Also, does anyone in here have their P.E.?

Sooooooooo. Trying to change topic but unsure what to post. Was going to post NASA's space squirrel but fear in everyone's current mood there will just be an argument about it.

So anyways I saw a Mustang GT kill a little bunny right in front of me the other day.

My GT3 rollbar is en route to be delivered Monday.

Going to try and finish the V8 wiring tonight.

Still want a bike... but honestly miss my Smart a ton. It had so much character.

Leaving at 3 today woohoo!

Weekend is going to be bad.

Yep.

I sense some hostility in here today.

+1

Well on a different note, closing was easy. Took about 25 minutes to sign my name about 30 times and Amber about 8 times. Got the keys and the garage door openers at 1:30!

I second taking any online course that the company offers, I knew my job but jack about the rest of the mortgage process and taking those courses prepared me alot for buy my house. I try to take atleast one every 2 months on some other department, sometimes I have too much work. Just because you intern doing one thing with in a field or company doesn't mean they will have an opening for that position when you graduate or the best way to move up in your career

Edit: Also, does anyone in here have their P.E.?

I took the F.E. exam my senior year in undergrad but I haven't done anything since. I have more than enough years of experience to take the P.E. exam but in my field it really isn't helpful. I feel my M.S. says more about my ability. I was always told P.E. licenses were geared more toward civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers in the construction and infrastructure industry. I remember when I was doing civil engineering work for the U.S. Navy a lot of the other guys had them. Now that I'm doing mechnical/aerospace engineering work at GE I know of few people with one.

I know a buddy selling a 2007 r6 that has a carbon fiber body for 4500. I want one but I have to wait till I move out so mom doesn't see it. Too many friends died my senior year for her to approve of one for me

Yea, being a Civil, PE and PS are the only ways to move up. I'm eligible next spring. Not looking forward to that test.

I still want to go back and take the extra 36 credit hours to sit for my F.S. test and go for a dual license eventually, but I don't have money to do so anymore.

In my department here, there are two people with their P.E. One is a Chemical engineer. In my discipline at this company, there isn't much of a purpose for it. Head downstairs to our Structural Mechanics group, and I think there are only a handful without it. I've been looking into possible future career paths and trying to decide what makes the most sense for either continuing education, or even a completetly different focus. Lots of ideas in my head right now.

The only reason to get it for me would be a "look what I have" kind of deal. Software specific certifications are more important in my field.

I think I'm going to end up waiting for the "little" panigale. Ducati usually comes out with the big bore (1098/1099) and then a smaller bore bike that looks just like it and uses the same parts (except engine), like the 848. If a smaller 1199 comes out between now and November I'll just have to wait until next year when my record going back 3 years is clean so I don't pay 10k for insurance, lol.

Where is this carbon r6 though? I'd like to see that!

I've decided its a good thing I don't have a motorcycle. I took out the 300cc quad at work last weekend, and immediately ripped through 4 gears in the back field. Turned it around and parked it. Decided it would be a bad mix with me on the highway at 80mph and other idiots around.

No hostility, and aside from the comment AJ made right before my post I got no impression whatsoever that you were trying to find work. If they don't give you work, they shadow someone and see what they do. If they get annoyed, then they might give you something to do just to get you off their backs. Like I said, go over current or previous projects, how they're structured and written. Security in most companies is a joke so you should be able to access the files. If they have people in the field, ask to be sent out with them, that is another valuable experience.

Phen use to get pissed when I bitched about money, a problem I bring on myself. I've stopped, for the most part, so I feel I'm in the same place. Instead of bitching about it, do something to change it.

Jess: I also want a bike, Ducati Monster (preferably an older one). I'm not getting one though, that would be a lot of trouble...
