The Ohio Auto-X and Track Event chat thread

The mirror point by won't work for my very dark rear tinted window... I also heard there was someone giving point by's inside their car. Not putting their arm out the window. I make it super clear I'm giving a point by with my whole bloody arm out the window.

Question for you fellas about track days I should have asked at the event. When you're stuck behind a slower car and want to pass but you've got a line of cars behind you that are faster do you pass first or let others pass you. The reason I ask is there were a couple of times I was stuck but it would have taken me forever to overtake the car in front of me and I felt like I would have been screwing the faster drivers behind me. I felt like I was better when I didn't have anyone behind me, so I tried to let the others go first. Was that wrong?

When I'm in this situation I prefer to get the faster cars by me. That way when I clear the slow car I don't have to worry about anything but driving fast again.

As you become more and more experienced on track and are driving with experienced drivers, you can pass the slow car while giving a pass to the fast cars behind you.

But the event was a phenomenal success. Having Tom and Andrew out was fantastic. I can't believe how much Auto Interests has improved since the first event I attended with them.

Although the maserati was slow I never had a problem with him not giving the point by. It was the FR-S that I was getting stuck behind. I'd catch him in the turns, but I only got a point by once. He was frustrating me a bit.

When these issues arise, please let us know. I have approached Jason about a number of ideas and he has put them to use, we are scheduled to meet in the next couple of weeks to discuss a few more things. One of my ideas is to have download sessions after every session to deal with these types of issues.

Jason is very open to ideas as he wants to make these events driver friendly. For you tinted window folks, we'll look into other options!

NASA does download sessions for everybody, it helps but it also cuts down on time to check the car if you need to, check your data or just get some rest

Thanks for the input guys, and Marlon it wasn't a huge issue as I felt better about letting the faster cars go as they could very quickly overtake him.

The later sessions normally take just a few minutes to see if they're are any issues. I means you have 30-40 minutes between sessions, how much time is needed to check out the car? Rather get issued cleared up as opposed to have the same issue keep occuring, where frustration sets in and it becomes a bigger issue.

I guess it depends on what the car needs. I was just checking my pressures, a quick look at my times, charging my phone, hydrating or eating. You don't have to go to every download session

There is always going to be a car holding people up in the lower run groups. I'm not really a fan of gestures within the car, too hard to see. There is nothing wrong with the standard point bys when everyone plays by the rules.

I had a lot of fun during the event and I think it was run well. I definitely ended the day with a big smile on my face and was very impressed by the reaction I got to bringing the 5. I expected some jeering but don't think I got any of that at all. This winter I think I'm going to do a bit more with the suspension and look into ways of getting more POWA! I plan on trying to get out for more of these next year. I will add that I certainly would have benefited from briefing sessions after my afternoon runs. If I was doing anything wrong I wanted to hear about it.

Darin, the only thing I saw was you came into madness "too hot" and then you had the off. Your lines look good and you hit all your marks when I was behind you. I always try to spend a lot of time on track with Novices so I can see how well they are doing. Did you have an Instructor at all? If so, did you receive any feedback from him?

Yeah, I had instructors with me until my last two runs. Marc rode with me and had some great tips. I had an instructor with me when I went off. He told me that was the most fun he had all day. Ha!

One idea that has been rolling around in my head since yesterday is if for the Novice group to grid for the next session the way they came off the track from the previous session. So the first at-speed session is grid normally, then each following session grid as you came off the track. I think this would decrease the amount of passing necessary for the faster cars/drivers and let the slower cars/drivers focus more on learning the track and their car. The added benefit to this is the general idea that the drivers moving to the front will probably be following better lines that the drivers behind may learn from. For me, being a slow car I think I would have benefited as I found myself at times worrying too much about getting the faster cars past me than perfecting my driving. I know this is wrong, but this was my first time out and everything was a learning experience. Don't get me wrong, I definitely will be doing at least one more Novice session next year and will be happy even if nothing changed. Just spit-balling ideas :D

^ That seems logical to me.

What's everyone's preference on helmets? Open-Faced or closed? I leaning towards open face but want to make sure I get something I can do auto-x and track days. Not sure if tracks require closed or some do and some don't etc.

Being a newb, I read several reviews before getting mine and went full face. I had read that there might be debris flying around and found that to be true during the track-day. We ran with the windows down and there were some bits of rubber that made there way into the car.

Closed face helmets are not required for any HPDE. They are required for wheel-to-wheel racing.

Sorry Darin, I don't like your idea at all. :) It would be really hard to get that setup. Plus, the fast cars aren't necessary grouped together.

No big deal, just thought I'd throw it out there. Next time I'm out, if you're there I wouldn't mind a few pointers from THE Will Dodd.

High five, Darin. I like your style. And open faced helmet are for dorks. lulz

Do you wear glasses on track?

I probably would not. I mostly wear them for computer screens at work, when I have a headache and night driving.

With an open faced helmet you can see the funny faces I make going into corners
