The Ohio Auto-X and Track Event chat thread

I have a couple of garages are under MOCO for us. I will be there by 6:30am on Monday. Since all of the groups are sold out, including the Intro to HPDE.

Woo-hoo! Awesome news on the garages, Marlon. For you guys to change tires and such. Mostly just so I can hang out not in the sun. :)

^^^ Oy.

Had a great time today at Mid-Ohio. Can't thank the Will Dodd (I'm now referring to him as "THE" Will Dodd) enough for all the help, instruction and encouragement.

Also great to see so many Mazdas at the track today. :)

You mean "THE Will Dodd, THE Ohio STIG" don't you? I had a lot of fun meeting people I'd been reading about on here, driving my car, and the cherry on top had to be Marc taking me out in his RX7. I got to see how slow of a driver I really am.

Thanks to Marlon fro setting up the deal to get Tom and Andrew out to Mid-Ohio yesterday, Tom help me out a lot yesterday. I had a great time only one off and it wasn't that bad I actually drove out of the gravel trap after the spin. BTW after I got back to MidOhio yesterday after dropping off a car and the gate was locked and my car was on the wrong side of it, but I did figure out how to get it out and made it home by 9:00 last night, what a long day hope I make it thru the day today.

Marc, thanks for once again lending a hand to help out another member. All in all it was a good day and I was happy to see all of the progress that the Novices made throughout the day! Tom and Andrew were really impressed with how well we took to the instruction, car set ups and the overall attitude of the group.

Andrew gave a few pointers to get me through the keyhole on the club course and the entrance to the thunder valley. I like they way that both he and Tom, make it simple and easy to understand! I think they'll be back next year for another event. I know that Jason and Sarah, we happy with the turnout and are looking to make Mid-Ohio a full weekend event! This was the largest turnout they've ever had.

Thanks to all that came out, it was great seeing all of those Mazdas in the paddock area. Also, sorry I did not to get to spend a lot of time with my fellow Meeps, on of the downsides of Instructing.....handling issues ( there was only a couple, Mr. Maserati and his point by's) and not much else. A number of changes/enhancements are coming to next year's events. Will keep you guys informed as to the progress.

My "too much sun" migraine was setting in so I left a little early. But thanks again to everyone for putting together a great event. I had a freaking blast.

I had a great time, Tom and Andrew were very helpful, cut 12 seconds from my first session and have 3 more to go before I can match Andrew's and Will's time. Should be doable if I work on a few things.

Question for you fellas about track days I should have asked at the event. When you're stuck behind a slower car and want to pass but you've got a line of cars behind you that are faster do you pass first or let others pass you. The reason I ask is there were a couple of times I was stuck but it would have taken me forever to overtake the car in front of me and I felt like I would have been screwing the faster drivers behind me. I felt like I was better when I didn't have anyone behind me, so I tried to let the others go first. Was that wrong?

This is a tough question. I would say if the slower car gives you a point-by, make the pass. Chances are, some of those faster cars behind you will also pass the slower car. Then, when you get to the next straightaway, you can give the faster cars point-by's. I could be wrong, but that makes sense to me. Maybe someone else can chime in on this?

Sometimes, if I'm constantly stuck in traffic or people aren't giving point-by's, I like to pull off the track onto the pit road. You can slowly drive down the pit road and then get right back on the track. This allows you to put some distance between yourself and the traffic so you're not stuck behind slower cars.

Darin, if you have the opportunity to pass do it and then you can let the other faster cars pass you. I had a couple of conversations with the Maserati driver and obviously, he got a bit better, but not by much. In speaking with Tom Long, he said we should implement a signal whereby the driver in a slower vehicle will waive or point to his rearview mirror to acknowledge that the slower driver has seen him and will allow him to pass at the next passing zone.

Again, pass when you can and then allow the faster cars to pass you when the opportunity presents itself!
