It absolutely is a fair comparison. The Si is just an upper trim level, it's not some limited production car like an MS product. The Si will have 197hp N/A and is only a 2.0L. The fancy Mazda3 is a 2.3 liter making only 160whp. the Mazda3 costs about the same too. It'd be a comparison to like a Type-R to a MazdaSpeed product.
We'll do the opposite...lets compare base models! the new sohc for the civics will make 140hp and 128trq, the DX coupe weighs in at 2590.
What does limited production have to do with this? Though this much, in addition to most everything else, hasn't yet been confirmed, EVEN IF the ms3 is as limited with its production as the msp was that would STILL make it the "upper trim level" you admitted the Si was. production levels are meaningless. Since they are again the "upper trim levels" THOSE TWO cars are the two to compare. Comparing what will be essentially the "mid-trim model" (the s wit its 40 less hp) IS truly unfair. Don't use the fact that the ms3 hasn't come out yet as an excuse.
Flip it around and you'll (hopefully) get my point. Let's say the ms3 had just came out while the Si was on its way in early spring. msrp for the ms3: $21995 msrp for the Si: $19999 Before you start sqawking about the difference in price, note that the difference between the Si and S is at least the same. Regardless, in making a comparrison between the mazda and honda compact offerings, since the Si hasn't yet come out, I'll conveniently leave that car out of the mix and instead simply go with the numbers that ARE confirmed. I then make the following statement: "the mazdaspeed3 will KILL the civic." While you may scoff, realize this is NO DIFFERENT than what you said. NONE! You'd fire back the same way I did for sure... "but what about the Si?" you'd say... it'll have 200hp (60hp more than the sedan) and a bunch of other things to make it more competitve with the likes of the mazdaspeed 3 and others. I'd then say to you, since the Si hasn't yet come out, I can't compare the two. Besides... if properly equipped (you know, every possible, conveivable option from the factory including lojack, undercarriage coating, paint protection, scotchguard and whatever else I can possibly toss into the mix in order to inflate the pricetag of the civic) the two cars are about the same in price anyway.
As far as your points on engine displacement go... come on! I'm not sure what your point is here but it's just plain nonsense. Everyone knows Hond's among the best at getting the absolute most power (NA) out of their engines but so what? Sure, the "fancy" mazda3 is only getting 160hp out of its 2.3l engine while the far more fancier Si is getting 197hp out of its extremely fancy engine. Does anyone actually care about this?
As far as comparing base models... I have absolutely no idea where you were going with this. Even if it made any sense, comparing base models is pointless since we're talking about 2 top of the line models. who gives a rat's ass about the base models? If you want that one, fine no problem. You win!
You almost had me when you brought up the forthcoming RSX type R... then it hit me!! That car's going to be close to 30k and compete with the likes of he Evo and Sti. Tell me I'm wrong all you want but, as far as I know, nothing has been confirmed and, with the type S in the 24-25k range (just like the wrx) it stands to reason that honda/acura will want to bring this vehicle up a notch into the next price category. Even if it's NOT 30k... call it 27k. We're at a least a 5k difference in price over the ms3. Compine that with the fact that Acura is Honda's "luxury" division. While mazda doesn't exactly have one, in this particular instance one could call upon the volvo s40 (or whatever the mazda3 was based on) for perhaps a more fair fight. But that's just plain nonsense. You know it... I know it. the mazdaspeed3 may compete with the rsx type R at the track but it will not compete with it in the marketplace.
Hopefully you realize your comparrison was unfair. Because of your job, you're clearly on the honda bandwagon. You've made you allegiance and I can dig that. Honda probably makes the best overall cars in the world. And while I like the new Si a lot, this debate HAD more to do with what is fair and logical and less to do with my allegiance towards mazda.
