The little Mazda that could... fit ANYTHING!

I'll be honest, when I first brought this car home and showed my wife the "trunk" space and the 2-seats-per-row layout (Heck, my old '92 Ford Taurus sedan had 6 seats), we weren't sure this vehicle would work for us.

But I must admit- I've been really pleasantly surprised! This vehicle is a lot more capable than it seems at first...

This past week, I had a lot of family visiting. I needed to borrow chairs, tables, and even hit home depot up for some light construction supplies to build a temporary hut outside (long story).
So, the 16 chairs and 2 folding tables fit without a problem (I wasn't really worried about that fitting), but the 8' long 2 x 4's from Home Depot were something that I was concerned about. The rear window doesn't open, which means that if the boards are too long to fit in the car, I have to drive with the trunk totally open.
Well, turns out all the wood I needed to transport fit perfectly between the seats, with the front of the beams just barely touching the shifter (I put a blanket in between to protect the console from being scratched by the wood boards), and the trunk closed just fine!
Not only that, but I could leave the 2nd row seats up and take a couple of people along to help carry the lumber. Nice.

Then, just yesterday, the 8 of us who were still in the house (my immediate family plus a few of my in laws) wanted to all go out for lunch. We were about to take 2 cars, when I said- hang on, I want to try something STUPID.
I'm not going to get into the details of how we did it, because obviously with only 6 seat belts this whole ordeal was questionably legal, but we fit 5 adults, one kindergarten-aged child, one 3 year old, and an infant in the car safely at the same time. I say safely because I am confident that everyone was safely secured, however much like the European model that offers the 3rd seat in the middle of the 2nd row, the US safety standards would probably argue with me.
In any case, that's a total of 8 people. And aside from one person who complained it was "stuffy" in the back, we did this rather comfortably (easy to say from the driver's seat, I suppose)!

Anyway, obviously you have to use your own judgement when it comes to creative seating- I'm not condoning anyone break the law, and although I'm confident everyone was safe the way we arranged it, someone else might not think it through as carefully and create a potentially dangerous situation.
But... my point is, it CAN BE DONE physically if the need arises. And the car drove like a champ- didn't feel bogged down or anything!

Now that I've found a double stroller (Joovy sit and stand Caboose) that fits behind the third row, I see no reason to need a full sized van for day to day driving.

So, my hat is off to you, Mazda. You proved my initial feelings wrong and have given me a car that I continue to appreciate more each day!

OK, your going to have to take a picture of that next time. I can't even imagine how 8 people can fit in this thing safely. Are you talking about lap sitting? We would never dare!

Assuming you are placing youngsters 3 and under (GASP) on laps, it is concievable that everyone but the driver could hold a child. Lets make the adults a little on the smaller side (>150lbs), so that makes 6 adults and 5 lap sitters = 11 humans in the 5. Hell, why not throw a lap dog into the driver's empty lap for an even dozen riders :)

No, no lap sitters. However, I did manage to fasten a baby carrier in between the two middle seats. It sounds silly, but honestly that seat was so snugly seated and belted, it was NOT going anywhere.
Then, my brother in law squeezed in between a 5 year old and another child in the back, and shared a seat belt.

Ok, so He admittedly wasn't so comfortable back there... But that still means we got 3 in the back, 3 in the middle, and 2 in front. And that's pretty impressive for such a compact vehicle.

I wish I took a picture but I had an odd load this weekend.

I had a 2.5 ton Amana heat pump in the rear with the 3rd row folded down and my installation stuff. (tool bag, torch, refridgerant, vac pump)

A company I work for built a storage building to support their rental cabins. We had to install a heat pump in it. Since my truck is only a regular cab my wife and kids couldn't ride up with me. So I loaded it all in the back of the 5 and we headed up from ATL to the NC Mountains.

The heat pump was about 250lbs, 24l x 24w x about 36 tall I'm guessing. It made a pretty good surrogate for the truck this weekend.

Last weekend...decided to blow in insulation into the attic...

Load #1 - 20!! bags of Green Fiber insulation (with rows 2&3 down). Could have squeezed one or two more with some rearranging/use of the front seat.
Load #2 - the huge heavy blower machine that they rent/loan you from Home Depot to do the blowing, AND a huge 3'x3' plastic tub holding 100' of (4"ID) hose. Easily. With baby seat in place in row 2.

Two nights ago - full size ping pong table (in quarters) and the legs/support apparatus with the base still assmbled. Rows 2&3 down.

Amazing little vehicle.

I fit a twin bed mattress and box spring, as well as the head and foot boards/frame in mine. I was really surprised it all fit. The ability to move the front and middle seats back and forth really make the difference when carrying longer loads. Now if only we could get them to make the front passenger seat fold flat.

Wow- I've been considering picking up a used bunkbed, but I'm scared I'll have to rent a larger vehicle first. I doubt any of the pieces are going to be longer than the twin mattress, so if you fit THAT... maybe...

2012 Mazda

have any of you checked out the video for the 2012 mazda on their official website? there is a clip from the LA Auto Show. they manage to fit all the camping and musical equipments plus four grownups into the 5, though two of the four people must be sitting or squatting on a pile of stuff with the second row folded down. it was quite exciting to watch.

Ha! I totally do this. I regularly fit an entire band worth of music equipment in this thing. I'm talking filled to the brim, front to back, side to side, floor to ceiling packed. It's quite a puzzle getting it all in, but I've got it down to a science.

with the second row down i have no doubt you can, but what about the people? the clip shows 4 people going into (and coming out from) the 5, so at least two of them must be transported as cargo instead of passengers. :)
