The freakin' clunk has begun!!!

MS Protege and Mazdaspeed 3
The Clunk began today :( I knew this was a common problem with the MSP and MP3 but had no idea how bad it really was....CLUNK! So angry (flame)

Sorry, had to vent!

Clunk? Is this from the rear suspension? I have heard a slight clunk in mine since I picked it up last Weds.. I have wanted to bring it back, I just can't justify leaving a 300 mile car at the dealer already for work :(..

If you have "the clunk" you will know it. It comes from the rear, and yes it's suspension related...rear sway bushings more specifically. It was undeniable when backing out of my driveway this AM. Mine will clunk going over the seams in the pavement (small seams) of my driveway. You can do a search on this issue and find that it has plagued MSP's and MP3's.

I have 2,100 miles on my MSP and it's about 50 days old. I'm going to take it in for an oil change soon enough and it will be adressed at that time.

Sounds like the noise mine makes.. It does it mostly while going over cracks and such in the road.

It also made a horrible CRACK/POP sound from teh front yesterday, but that was because I hit a crack in the road right as I banged second gear while schooling a guy in a Jetta :).

The clunk in ours was apperent at first but went away. I try hard to get it to make the noise and 99% of the time it doesn't make any noise and if and when it does it's so small, it's always, did I just hear the clunking? Mine seemed to go away as time went on.

I do not want to speak as the "clunk specialist" because I am certainly not. However, based on my first full day with noticeable "clunk" - - if you have it, YOU KNOW IT. I'm not crappin' you here. Mine sounds like there is a spider monkey trapped in the trunk "clunking" the sheet metal to be released. It's noticeable and distinct.

However, I have read other posts that state at times it can be hard to reproduce. It is a cooler day here by NC standards so that is helping the "clunk's" cause. We went through a rapid temp change in 12 hours so who knows that could even play a role.

it can come and go over time. It specially likes to go away when you take it to the dealer to hear it....arg....they'll think your nuts at first.

I can relate to this.;)

OMG a clunk!!! no it could be a noise from a modded suspension... LOL sorry

but serious, whats the big deal. Its a cluck, hear it and move on. I did and mine went away.

Umm, just dropped a small chunk of change to get the car which is practically bran new. That would be the the OMG. LOL all you want but that is design BS and I won't stand for it. You think you will just wait for it to go away? You may think differently when your sway bar goes through the windshield of a car behind you. Not to attack Chris but I'm not excited about that prospect so I'm gonna get pissed and take what action I can with the dealer as necessary. Sorry for the angry rant (rant)

The passive stance is why it won't be addressed by Mazda USA as a recall.

Again, I AM Chris I don't mean to pick, I just won't take getting screwed by any business.

Was only reading this because my MSP has about 278 miles on her and I'm not looking forward to any clunking... maybe will replace the rear urethanes with rubber (HERESY!!!) just b/c the rubber won't clunk. Yuck. Hope this is the only problem I have to look forward to (aside from the funky needs-resetting headunit (can live with that) and the clucky BOV (which sounds neeeet to me, until it fails... do they fail?...) To think I left VW's for more reliability in Mazda...

Heathen23, without the "venom" you have a great point - don't take a passive stance, but don't go into the dealers screamin' either - these guys have a LOT of experience dealing with aggressive p/o'd people but tend to soften quite a bit when faced with calm, professional reason. Escalate politely and they'll usually cave (or at least refer you on). Yell, and the door usually gets pretty firmly closed. Remember - they're a business - deal with them in a businesslike manner. They're also people doing their jobs - gotta respect that, since the service advisors have to put up with a LOT. There are a MILLION stories out there... from THEIR point of view...

Oh I know and its cool. I understand where you are coming from. But Have you ever had a car with a modded suspension? They are not the quietest things in the world. Lots of settling, clunks, pings, stuff like that. Does it make it alright no! I'm just saying it will happen and it will come back. no matter what. sorry

I see your point also, Chris, and agree there are some tradeoffs for performance, but clunking shouldn't be one of them. The reason most folks buy the MPS is that the "factory" guys have the R&D money and engineers to make it "right" - rather than enduring the aftermarket "maybe it'll work" philosophy... with a now-50kmile-warranty, Mazda certainly doesn't want the liability hanging over their heads for replacing all these clunking bushings... so if it comes back I'm set for the life of the warranty, too bad the dealer is 45 minutes away... or else I take the tradeoff into my hands and get rubber bushings, trading some suspension stiffness for a quieter ride. Ah well - life is a series of tradeoffs sometimes, and, like in chess, they compound each other...

I couldn't have said it better PING. You are absolutely right. Thanks for saying what I was getting at without the "venom".

i have the clunk sounds like shes falling apart. once summer comes ill get them changed. no damage being done, just a sound (right?)
