I guess the NA forum will basically have the rest of us, the unboosted masses.
 
I love it, even though im boosted i really want to see someone really push the limits the fs series motors.

I am trying right now...I just got done with a test set of 12.1:1 CR pistons and aluminum con-rods (the head is still getting worked though)...I need to give Nick a call and see how soon I can get my AEM EMS...as soon as I get it and the head back, the built engine is going in...

Hey Install, what do you think it the highest compression ratio we can run on street gas? I was guessing about 12:1, so about where you are going with your engine. Sound about right? How do you calculate that? Yeah, I know, probably not an easy answer to that question.

Damn install...i didnt realize u were so serious.... 12.1:1 HC pistons are nutz... the AEM will be perfect though.... good luck and keep us posted.
 
Thanks men...I sourced an MP3 engine last Feb. with 17,000 miles on it and gutted it...The MP3 had been rear-ended big time, and then apperantly rolled...In either case the engine was the only thing salvageable...The Intake manifold had been removed, as well as the ECU and pumps belts and pulley's...it was simply an assembled short block for the most part...

I then just used the stock pieces as templates for some machining equipment and dies at school...and somewhat came up with some forged aluminum con rods...and just finished the pistons yesterday...These will not be the working parts however, I will eventually go with some tried and true forged internals...But I had to do some CNC machining and Shot-peening for a summer class and figured what the hell...might as well make some forged goodies since its free...The rods are by far not the strongest...I only used some aluminum billet that had been forged just prior, CAD'd the shapes and specs and let the crazy expensive equipment do the rest...Its just a trial and error type of thing...

The pistons will alter the static compression ratio to that of 12.1:1 approximately...I ordered some blank cams for the head work, which will be done later this week...The cams will be the biggest "if"...I didn't have much time to research the specs for this specific app...So I just took what low rod ratio engine's tend to like...plenty of duration, a little more overlap, and just slightly more lift...

The biggest excitement for me is the aluminim rods...These suckers are friggin' light...and after some crank knifing I hope to rev the poop out of this thing...It will depend on the cams though...It will take a lot of "scavaging" to keep air moving into engine at those piston speeds...So if I pull off around 8 grand and still feel powerful, I will be thrilled...we shall know soon enough...

like you mentioned...there is no easy answer for it...and conditions in differant areas will change what is said to be "safe"...

Ultimately what is improtant is the tuning...You can't run 10.5:1 safely on the stock computer...But with proper tuning you can run a whole lot more than that...obviously premium gas should be used once the compression is increased into the 10:1 area...and as of now I can only "hope" that it can be done with street gas...I have seen some B18's running upwards of 13.1 on 93 octane...and stock E-46 M3's are running around 11.7:1 from what I remember...So as long as I get the tuning right I should be ok hopefully...and I realize these other engines have little to do with it, it depends greatly on heat...both the other mentioned engine's have aluminum blocks, something the FS lacks...we could debate all day about specific heat capacities between aluminum and iron, so we can just skip it for now...I will most likely do some work on the cooling system, and maybe break down and get an oil cooler and a new radiator just to be really safe...

If I pop this thing I am not too worried...almost everything was free...just took some work...
 
The rods right now were made by Penn State University...sort of...They have the dies and machining equipment...and the billet aluminum plate was made near State College PA at some metallurgy place...I forget the name...But I used some different Solidwork's programs and CAD crap to dial in the specs to that of my cast rods...(obviously made them noticably larger to heed strength but for the thrust bearings and wrist pin tolerances)..you then enter your premade template and it literally cuts everything for you...I also have access to some shot-peening and cryo treatment equimpment that will be used for some gearbox upgrades soon...I love messing with 100,000 dollar equipment!!!...

but Andy this is just some tests to see what can be done as far as revving, breathing, and streetable compression ratio's...I will not trust my own work in the end...most of this computer aided design s*** was graded for one of my summer classes, so that is what really set it in motion...all of the aluminum stuff I got was included with my tuition for this summer...
 
even if not a higher compression -- i personally think it would be kick ass to beable to pull into the 8,000 rmp range -- hehehe :)
 
I am certain the block will tolerate it...I am a little concerned about this attempt though without any work done on the crank...The vibartions from the assembly at those speeds will truely test my work...eventually the crank will be knife edged and re-balanced...but I don't have the cash to do it yet...8000 is only around 1 grand higher than what a stock FS will "tolerate"...it sucks breathing wise up there, hence no power, but physically it isn't ready to scatter...
 
I'm glad to see someone is working on N/A power, not that no one else was. I was thinking of going the F/I route but now I changed my mind. Install, keep us posted on your mods. I am looking foward on seeing your accomplishments on N/A power. I like the fact that it is all motor. Thank you admins for this thread, you gave us N/A people a place to turn to. I have been trying to modify my car with all means necesary to pull out as much power from my engine N/A. I currently have a ram air configuration on my 2.0 which I have put together. Don't think anyone has this setup for there Mazda's but me, could be wrong though. I have yet to see someone have it how I have it set up. Going to be working on my tranny during this week putting an ACT clutch in. Don't have a dyno but feeling is what I have to go by for now. Keep up the good work people.
