I still don't see a single name calling incident through this entire thread. It all seems like healthy and enlightening discussion for me. I'm so confused.
I don't recall any condescending behavior or name-calling towards OP either. Just shock over his decision.
Sure - follow the advice of some schmoe on a forum over actual technical specifications of tire manufacturers, just because it fits what you already wanted to do.
And I’d be perfectly willing to call the people doing it “dangerous and stupid” to their faces.
See below.
Note that the general warning was for name-calling and condescending behaviour - while it may seem borderline or harmless to you, it was offensive to others. Additionally, sometimes moderators notice trends in the discussion that can devolve into negative behaviour, and moderator warnings/reminders are posted just to help steer the conversation back to a good place.
Back to the topic, please.
Yes it was excessive, but it was done in good faith. OP's idea sounds awful, and many of us were doing the right thing by giving him solid facts and supporting information to try and talk him out of it.
In my mind, that's what a forum with solid advice and contribution should be about, both good or bad. OP came here seeking validation and asked you to close the thread when he didn't get it.
Okay - since I’m the “offender” I’ll address this.See below.
Of equal importance to stating the facts and dangers is doing so in a non-confrontational manner. Unfortunately due to the confrontational way concerns have been expressed in this thread, it has been severely derailed despite multiple attempts at recovery by @sm1ke and myself.Okay - since I’m the “offender” I’ll address this.
I called somebody some schmoe on a forum. I’m some schmoe on a forum. So is everybody else here. We all have opinions, but we’re also capable of bringing facts to the table. I brought facts in the form of tire manufacturer specifications that directly refute the anecdotal experiences of people who violate proper treatment of tires. The plain fact is that running any tire underinflated is the worst thing you can do to it - it causes heat buildup, and heat is the ultimate enemy of tires. Remember the Ford-Firestone debacle? The crux of the issue was that Ford specified a too-low inflation pressure that led to tread separation. It is objectively dangerous behavior, and I’m going to call out anyone who recommends it.
