Synthetic Oil...

Ok guys. I've decided to switch to full synthetic oil for my 626, and since it costs like $50 to get synthetic done at a shop, I've also decided that I am going to start changing my oil myself. Even though it's autumn, and it's freezing outside (pissed)

I was going to ask what kind of oil you guys recommend, but then I realized that everyone would just list their favorites. So.... i guess my question will be: What brands, types, etc. should i AVOID? Also, where exactly is the oil filter located? is it in the same spot as the next gen 6? And what kind of filter should i get?

Also I am going to be changing my spark plugs. Any brands? suggestions? warnings? Thanks.

Oil...pick one. Mobile1 always safe choice. Plugs...anything other than just copper NGK vpower is pretty much overhyped bulls*** just to get more cash out of you. Car won't know the difference, only the wallet will notice.

Purolator micronic filters go for about 6.00 & are just as good as the k&n or any of the high dollar filters are.

i use the k&n just because it's easier to install/remove (it has a 21mm nut on the bottom of the filter). i used to use regular fram but personally i think it's worth the extra $4-6 for an easier oil change

Ok. Thanks guys. This should be pinned somewhere so others who want to change their oil don't have to make a new thread.

I know its Mazda 323 based, but the same still applies. http://www.mazda323performance.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12170
Excelent Info on oil and filters there. Ive been going by it and I have always had the best oil performance and lifespan.
As for filters, Ide go with the OEM filters. Napa, Wicks, and M1 filters are good too. Avoid Fram, Quest, and other cheapy filters all together.

I personally have used bothe M1 and Castrol Syntec and both have been great, Castrol especially. I have used nothing but synthetics too. Best oil to use in a boosted engine IMO. :)

Mine aint boosted, but eh... lol.

We have a Napa auto parts store like 5 mins from my house, so i'll go there for the filter. Probly gonna have to pick up some jackstands too.

Ok, i got a NAPA oil filter, 4 quarts of Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30 oil, a large sealable oil pan, and a pair of 2 ton jack stands (smallest ones they had). Waiting for the engine to cool off, throw down some newspaper to catch the inevitable spill, and i'm gonna try this. :D

I'll do the spark plugs another day. i need to borrow a spark plug ratchet head from someone.

Update: Great success!!! the hardest part was getting that damn drain plug off. The mechanics at my shop overtightened it (pissed). That, and the fact that i jacked it up with the spare tire jack... the rest went quite smoothly. :D

definately. the ones they had were all like $100 or more, so i'll just borrow my friend's next time.

i can even start charging my parents/sister to change their oil :D

I used to use RoyalPurple with a Mobil1 filter in my 2.5L KL-DE Millenia. Worked great, ran perfectly and kept my valvetrain very clean. You even feel a preformance improvement when using it. It is expensive though.
