Swapping Auto for Manual

:
1995 Mazda Protege
I have a 95 Mazda Protege which is unfortunatley automatic but on the other hand its a 1.5 DOHC and I was wondering did the 95 come factory with a 5 speed? Will a 1.8 5 speed bolt up to a 1.5 engine?

well i cant answer you about the compatablility of the 1.8-5spd vers 1.5-5spd i can tell you you are in for a lot of work . i would recommend a complete donor car rather tna have to source out all the bits and pieces you will need to make the swap. pedal assy , linkage, shifters , misc bolts, hydraulic clutch system ect

on the other hand ... you will love the car as a stick compared to the auto slushbox

You will probably need the stick ecu and drive shafts . I would be easier if you werre to sell you car and buy a 5 speed . It will probably cost you over 1000 to do this

I have someone selling me another 95 Protege that is a 5-speed but it has a blown 1.8 engine in it for 200 bucks. I talked with a buddy of mine and he said he'd do the work for 200 bucks but my car is an automatic, 1.5L.

Buy the car ,rebuild the engine and sell yours ,if the other car is in good shape

That would be alot easier. See the way I was lookin at it is my car is a 1.5 DOHC and the other one is a 1.8 SOHC

I would still just repair the other engine , if you want a DOHC ,just get a head and puy it on the SOHC block

Thanks Im not a mechanic but Im no dummy if ya know what I mean. I didnt know there was a DOHC 1.8L that went in a 95 Protege b ut Ill look around.
Appreciate it man.

Ok cool. I want to beef my car up a little. Money isnt a problem. But there seems to be nothing for a 95 Protege. PPL has said use GTX parts but what is a GTX? LOL. Did the make a 95 Mazdaspeed Protege and if they dont can I somehow turn my 95 into a mazdaspeed?

The 2nd gens didnt come with a Dohc , you would have to use a 1st gen head

WTF are you talking about? ALL 2nd gens in north america had DOHC engines!

Everything is running fine. I think its just the sensor on the tranmission that is bad. The CEL goes off and stays off for about a week and then I go and spray the undercarriage off and it will come on. Any ideas on what this means?

Clarify something. Is the automatic transmission on your 95 Protege working perfectly? Is it just that the CEL light comes on or does the automatic tranny behave strangely? Is this sensor you think is messed up causing any problems, even if they're small? How many miles are on the car?

The transmission shifts hard like jerks you back. When you put it in drive it slams into gear. There is around about 167,000 on the car. The car runs good when the CEL isnt on but as soon as it comes on it runs like crap. Yea the CEL comes off and on.

You say the car slams into gear. That reminds me of when I had a 95 and it did the same thing. I had it running pretty good but noticed the idle was pretty high. I took off the Throttle Body and used TB Cleaner and cleaned it along with the BAC and IAC as far as I could get the stuff to reach in there by way of the TB openings. When I put it back together the idle had gotten worse-MUCH WORSE! It was so fast that the tranny would slam into gear, as yours does. It wasn't the cleaning. I had adjusted the accelerator cable incorrectly. Is your idle very high? That would explain it suddenly slamming into gear like that when you put the lever to Drive. It might also cause a code.
