To me, the CX-5 belongs in the SPORT Utility Vehicle class, it does everything the class' name defines.

It's unibody construction, built off the same basic chassis as the 3 and 6. Therefore it's a CUV. This is what the acronym was invented for and the CX-5 (think about that model designation!) is a classic example. If it makes you happy, you can call it a "car-based SUV, which is another way of defining the term CUV.

That's a good way of looking at it. I find it a little funny acronyms given to vehicles that are not SPORTy at all- big, heavy, and truck based. To me, it should be the other way around. Small SUV's like ours should've been SUVs and Chevy Tahoes should've been CUVs (trucks crossed over into car-like utility). BTW, Paris1, thanks for stainless steel fog light trim. I didn't realize you were on the forum until I saw a picture of your vehicle on here that matched your eBay listing picture!

Hope it works for you. Funny thing is, I liked the look for a while, and then suddenly I didn't like it anymore. Mods are like that sometimes I guess!

Just vague categories of vehicles. EPA classification is SUV (light truck) exactly what Mazda intended.

I remember your post of putting it on, removing it, and reinstalling it. And your 100% right about mods. It's about whatever suits your mood at the time. I love the color of
your CX-5, shame on Mazda for removing Sky Blue Mica from it's lineup!

I wouldnt pay too much attention to car classifications. Manufacturers can make up any classification they want. The Germans like to use the term 4 door coupe. Another example is that for some reason we still call things like the Odyssey and Nissan Quest a Minivan; theres nothing mini about those vehicles.

I thought CUV stands for Compact Utility Vehicle.

I think its "crossover utility vehicle"

good thing is there are a good amount of suspension upgrades to make it more sporty handling. Motor, not many options for the gas (tuning available), diesel lots of potential and apparently 1 psi boost additions is netting <7 sec 0-60's. stiffer springs, coilovers, bracing bars, etc.
