Stupid Things You've Done Modifying/Maintaining Your Ride

Okay everyone,
<O:p</O:p
Time to 'fess up.
<O:p</O:p
At the very least we can learn from each other's mistakes.

</O:p
1. I usually forget to reattach one of the electrical connections around the throttlebody.
<O:p</O:p

2. While installing the Outlaw Engineering manifold spacer, I did not notice that a wire was pinched, which several weeks later lead to my car dying at Shannonville. We managed to push the car onto a front wheel trailer, which caused my front bumper to break one of the mounting clips, and cause a crack in the left lower front under the foglight. Since then I just used that enlarged hole for ram air which you all can see! Expensive tow back to DWM too.

<O:p</O:p
3. While removing the EGR connector on the stock exhaust manifold, the nut for some reason decided to stick to the pipe and hence I twisted the pipe! Had to buy a new one and about 1 hr later I replaced that.

<O:p</O:p
4. I caused a minor crack in the clear cluster guage while installing a SS guage bezel.

<O:p</O:p
5. I can't find my ABS fuse! (although I could really care less).

<O:p</O:p
6. I used SAE nuts instead of Metric nuts to hold my rear license plate. One of them decided to stick to the "speednut" behind and hence, when I turned the bolt, the nut would just rotate. I had to cut through the plastic plate garnish, and use a dremel to cut off the bolt head.

<O:p</O:p
7. While removing the stock shifter and installing the B&M, I should've cleaned out the opening to allow a better fit. Now I can't even come close to using the stock "C" clip, and no amount of hammering will budge that shifter lower. (Although apparently this occurs on this board as well).

<O:p</O:p
8. Left the rear strut caps on too long, and hence the numbers on the Illuminas are almost rubbed off. Had to drill a much bigger hole and use fluorescent paint to mark it.

<O:p</O:p
9. Broke the PRC Solenoid Valve when my hand slipped off the strut bar.

<O:p</O:p
10. Burnt myself when soldering the wires for the front bumper light flash modification.

<O:p</O:p
11. Stripped one of the heads off the bolt to the EGR valve actuator. Did not have a tap and die set so I did the best I can to remove it. Now a bit of metal is stuck on the threads and I'm using 2 OEM bolts, and 1 other one. The size FYI is M4 x 35mm.

12. Somehow lost the gasket to the EGR valve.

<O:p</O:p
13. Put an old set of rotor backs on the fronts. Not a good idea since the best speed I could get was 95kph due to the intense vibrations.

<O:p</O:p
14. Forgot to really tighten the lug nuts=vibration at speed.
<O:p</O:p

15. Got wax clogged into the sprayer nozzle.

<O:p</O:p
16. While removing the rear CF spoiler to do a rattle fix, I cracked it slightly.

<O:p</O:p
17. Using rear license plate bolts that were too long. They dug into the paint and body of the rear hatch.

<O:p</O:p
If I think of anymore I'll add them.

#1 and #4 for me as well!

helped a friend (still?) with some mods to his p5, when we were done we hooked his battery back and put the terminals on the wrong posts...actually i think we put the battery in backwards....screwed the whole car up...he finally got towed form the side of the rode at midnight...(argh)

1.Broke the purge control valve installing CAI

2. Broke off that huge stock antenna while washing my car drunk...Now i have no idea how im going to put another anything in there, i have find an extractor of some sort..
3.

i stripped the egr pipe on the inside when i was doing the header, found that out when i was installing the turbo. so i order a new pipe to finish up the turbo.

#17 was done by the dealership... ^^^^Awesome.

I added too much touch up paint to my drivers rear door when fixing a chip. Now the fix looks like ASS and I can't do anything about it.

Sure you can. Emory cloth is Super-super fine sand paper, get some. Find an auto body supply shop, tell them what you're trying to do, they should have what you need.

Wet-sand the paint goob, very, very gently, just to knock the top off of it so it smoothes into the area around it. You could also try claybar, but I don't think that will take enough off. Anyway, wetsanding, followed by a buff and polish and a good waxing should take care of it.

If you're not comfortable trying it yourself (completely understandable, I've taken autobody classes, kind of know what I'm proposing you do, and I'm still not sure I'd try it on a car I liked!) take it to a detailer, ask 'em what they can do. It will still cost less than taking it to a body shop, where they'd likely want to sand and re-spray the whole panel!

Umm I have left my mass air flow sensor disconnected! Left multiple tools in the engine bay after pulling those all night turbo swaps (way too much alcohol involved)
So now if i drink and work on my car the first thing i do the next day is do a once over on the area i was working on to check for tools and loose connections!

Bought rims w/o paying attention to offset. Subsequent rubbing required fender rolling. End result looks great though!

Stripped front motor mount nuts using crappy 12 point socket, bought nut extractor but failed to get it to work, had mechanic cut off nut and install m/m.

Did tons of research to upgrade wiring harness to handle 65W high/low beam bulbs, eventually tore all the relays and wiring out. Now running same bulbs on stock wiring harness w/o issue.

Bought MSP shift lever but it was too short, had machine shop at work cut it and weld in a 1.5" extension, which broke after 2 weeks of use due to crappy tack welds.

Learned a lot of stuff I'm not sure I wanted to know. :)

I'm sorry, on topic: Changing the Tranny fluid on the Miata, I bought a hand-pump to pump the fluid from the bottle into the trans. I didn't buy or have any extra tubing. The pump sat on top of the bottle and is 6-8" tall. Add that 6-8 inches to the 8" or so of the bottle, and there's not really any room to stand the thing up under the car, sitting on the Rhino Ramps!

I was barely able to stand the thing up by fitting the top part of it in between the trans and the sheetmetal of the tranny tunnel! Then I had to hold the bottom so it wouldn't tip and pump the damned thing by reaching across my body or face, under the car with no room to move my arms!

No joke, in the middle of this work, which I'm doing in the driveway since this was at my garage-less first house, it starts to POUR down rain! I just had my dad grab all the tools and go in, and I stayed there and got wet while I finished the job.

The correct way to do this is to use a long hose, and have someone pump from next to the car, preferably when it's not raining!

I've forgotten to replace the little o-rings that go on the bottom of the injectors when swapping my IM.

I also strip/break bolts/nuts/studs like it's my job.

Does buying cheap parts count? I lowered my car using "Number 1" sleeve and spring kit from NOPI! Now I have an annoying noise in the front end of the car when I hit a bump or when I am turning at low speeds. It sucks so bad! (pissed)

when i was installing my IM spacer, i put a paper rag on the TB to keep it clean, i reinstalled the intake with the paper still inside

that was fun

(first) thee best thread ever!

I got to many to list at once. my team is called Half-Fastracing "where every thing is done half-fast"

but I think im going to check my intake manafold to see if I pulled the rag out before I put the T/B back on(thought)

I always find out the factory uses more fasteners than needed as I finish the job and always have some left over....

Sometimes bolts and other miscellanious parts as well!!!

I overtightened the battery tie down nut causing the threaded piece on the strut mount area to break.

Took a small chunk off the rear bumper removing the tail lights.

Took another chunk off the passanger side mirror backing into one of those old school poles that used to have speakers on them at the drive-in movie theatre. (does this count?)

the other day intsalling my short shifter, i over-rode the car on the ramps, and bottomed out the whole damn car. had to get a jack to remove the ramps from under my car.

all in all, no damage done, and i got a freaking schweeet ss and kartboy bushing installed. hell, i even made a new homemade shift boot for $.99. it turned out pretty nice, i might post pictures if anyones interested.

anyways, always have a spotter when your driving your car on ramps...

first one: stripped hood bolts on my carbon hood. (jack asses make the best hood but cant spend ten cents for the right damn nuts)

haha this is the best thread ever.

here's my recent blunder:

while changing my tranny fluid to Redline MT-90, I didn't notice that the washer that belongs to the drain plug fell into the plastic pan that I used to catch old oil when I was draining the old tranny fluid. I was finished with the job and pouring the old tranny fluid into the empty Redline bottles so I could recycle the stuff at Autozone. Low and behold, at the bottom of the oil pan...voila. A washer, staring back at me. *insert one minute of cursing here* so I had to clean out the old oil pan, redrain the brand new Redline MT-90 back into the pan, put the washer on the drain plug and screw it back in to the bottom of the tranny, and refill it from the fill plug. Basically, I had to change my tranny fluid twice. (hand)

Luckily I haven't done too many crazy things to my p5...yet. *crosses fingers*
