Strange lock issue, can’t unlock CX-5

I have a 2017 CX-5. I parked at the airport and I think I left the dome light on. When I got home I can't get into the car. I replaced the battery in the FOB with no luck. That was when I noticed there seemed to be NO power in the car. I tried using the manual key from inside the FOB. I turns the lock, but doesn't unlock the car. I also tried the second key with no luck. Any ideas? I've never used the manual keys because the FOB has always worked.

I guess when you use the mechanical key ususally it triggers the locking system to unlock all of the doors, which needs the battery. But you would think it should open the driver's door.

Just a thought - did you try turning the key both ways? Clockwise and Counter Clockwise.

Rut row!

I just now went out to my garage and tried the key in my fob for the first time ever.

As mentioned above, clockwise and CCW. CCW unlocks and CW locks on my CX.

When turning the key, it sounds as if the mechanism is electronic and not mechanical at all, other than the insertion and turning of the key. Which is VERY bad news if your battery is dead.

This can't be right. How could Mazda design the system this way?

When there is no more power in the battery, you will be able to open the lock without electric support.

Too much technology in this case.
The mechanical key also triggers the lock actuator, which does not work w/o 12V battery power.
Dumb design, I agree.

If this happens to me....
I'd call a lock smith (or AAA) to unlock the door mechanically. Open the hatch.
Jump the car.

That's what I was afraid of.

The dome light is programmed to turn off after a period of time to prevent completely discharging the battery. Is the battery dated 2017 ?

That may be in the later models. My 16 doesn't auto shut off.

Are you saying you have to wait until the battery fully discharges? That can't be right.
No, I said you can open the door WITHOUT electric support if the battery is completely empty.
You just unlock the door with the physical key using manpower only.

Then Why can't I open my door? I called my dealers maintenance department and they said if the key turn in the lock it should unlock it. It turns, but will not unlock.
