so i went tubing on the Animas river here in Durango the other day, and we shuttled, meaning we parked a car where we were getting out and we left one where we started. well, mine was left where we started, with the key under the seat and the door unlocked just like i have done many times before. only this time, someone stole my keys, phone, ipod, and my friends phone. i wasnt too upset because electronics are easily replaced, and i figured my insurance would take care of the key. Apparently though, there was no key codes made for 2003 mazdaspeed proteges, for whatever reason, and the only place that can make a key is in albequerque 3 hours away. i dont want to havev to go all the way to albequerque to get a key, does anyone have any ideas?

What a pain. I don't know the answer to your question, but wanted to say how much I think the scenario you describe sucks. It's bad enough they took stuff they could pawn off for meth or whatever, but the key was pretty much worthless without the car (heh, at least they didn't take that too!), talk about adding insult to injury.

Good luck. :/

You are so lucky your car was even there. I can't believe you left it unlocked with the keys in it.

Call a Lock Smith. They can make the keys for you on the spot. As far as I know our cars do not need the Electronic Type Keys to start correct?

I got a little tag on my key chain when I bought the car new with some number on it that I was told is used to make new keys.

The dealership can make you new keys using your VIN.

Although I'd be more concerned about the person out there that has your keys....
