Hey all..driving home today..from college..about 3-5miles from my house..

I hear a Loud Pop..Noise..and than a noise like..blump..blump...blump...really loud!

I am like..i hope to ******* god i didn't blow somthing up..I was driving nice and slow home..granny shifting really...

Well..I pop..the hood..and see..Cylinder number two from the left of the engine bay...boot has exploded..it's in pieces..I was like WTF?

This is the Stock Plug..I have the Sparkco wires..but nothing happened to them!

Is the one with that coil thing on it! Looks like little black box!

Well..anywayz..anyone ever had this happen? Could i have blown something up in the engine? Or was it just a faulty? Anyone know..if i have to purchase a whole new coil w/ plug..or can just the plug be purchased??

I am planning to go to mazda..tomm..and purchase a new one..but wanted some info before i went in!

TIA

I have never seen that in my life...

do you hose your engine off to clean it? If you somehow got moisture between the plug jacket and plug, the engine heat may have caused it to boil...Raising the pressure and blowing the s*** out of that thing...I can't tell from the pics...Does it look like it actualy exploded, with burns and scores on the rubber pieces? or did it just burst from pressure of some sort?

It almost looks like the electrod is touching on the spark plug, is it? A short like that may be too much to handle. Wow, never seen anything like that before.

Yeah, I was gonna mention that it looks like the spark plug had ZERO gapping. Uugh. That's nasty, though. Probably just as Slenser (Who drives the best colour of P5, as a side not. ;) Not that I'm biased or anything) said, the short may have overloaded something, if that electrode is touching.

Well..there was 0 gap..Not sure why..i gapped them at 35....When i took off the coil pack..and boot..and went to remove the spark plug..it was very very loose..in my engine..the rest of my plugs were ok..not losse or anything...

So anywayz..i went to mazda to purchase a new coil pack..And they quoted me $87.93 plus tax and will take like 5-6 days to get it!

I was like WTF! They asked if i wanted to order it..i laughed at them..told them..to check around and see who else will have it...b/c my car is a daily driver!

So they pointed me to another dealership..about 1hr from my house..i went there..and picked up the part...i asked how much..they told me 17.17 including tax...I was so enraged on how one dealership wanted to charge me so much $$$..

Well..i installed new spark plugs..and the new coil pack..reset the ecu..and all seems well!! I asked the parts guy at wayne mazda does this happen much?? He was like..we have allot in stock..so i guess it does!

Wow... That's freaky... If it weren't running fine now, I'd say it was a snapped rod that threw a piston up and munged the plug, but it looks like not. =) A good tip, though; Do a compression test, like now... Just to make sure, you know?

lol, i DOUBT that happens much, dude was just making conversation. (seeing as how you're the FIRST person to have it happen to you on the boards!) :D

plug gaps just don't change like that on their own! If you did'nt drop the plug or bang it after taking it out of the head, then something is wrong with the picture. DO run a comp test on all 4 cylinders, and check them against specs. It's strange.
