Stock dyno run with pinging, help!

:
Mazdaspeed Protege 2003.5
I went to dyno my MSP the other day and it is totally stock besides the Forge BOV. I am a newb so I had never heard pinging but all the techs at NGP (place I had it dynoed) said the car was pinging quite a bit, mostly over 4500 and 5k rpms. I was running 93 octane, but I admit it was from a convinience store gas station so it probably wasn't the best gas. Do you think gas was the culprit here? If not, what can I do to combat this? I'm going to get 94 octane from Sunoco for a couple tanks and go back and dyno it to see if it makes a difference. I've attached pics of the dyno sheets and I'll have a movie (8mb) of the actual run on my site in a bit, you can hear the pinging. Thanks for any advice.

Mike

wow, that hp curve is smoother than my ass! :D I would assume yes, but since someone is going to ask anyways, are you flashed? What spark plugs are you running? If you are totally stock (plugs included) then you might consider going a step colder. Wish I could help more

man it looks like for some reason you are running a little lean above 5k rpm because the a/f goes above twelve at 5k and then above 13 at 5.3k which I believe is too lean. I dunno what would cause the problem if you are stock, it may be time to take it to the dealer and show them the vid or something.

I am flashed, but I'm not sure how well the dyno vid would go over with the dealer, haha. Vid will be up soon, my server is slow today. Anyone else care to comment, I need help.

Well if it makes you feel any better two msps pinged when we did dyno's at Agile Auto a couple weeks ago. You are not alone! Switch your gas, if it still happens I'm sure you know the dealer drill...good luck man...

the dyno vid shouldn't bother the dealer very much. you aren't running 45 mods and then blaming it on Mazda. technically the car could've been put under the same stress/conditions on the roadway (except you would've gotten more airflow). as long as you're completely stock, I'd say let Mazda deal with it.

damn the knock! Those were pretty good numbers too. I might be hitting a dyno pretty soon. I know the whole arguement about that just being results of one of XXXX amount of speeds, but if I'm only running cali 91 pisstane at stock boost or a smidgen above(7-8psi) I could be pinging every day.

Yeah that's a pretty pronounced knock....get to the dealer ASAP. Something is up.

You never heard this before?

I can't hear anything when inside the car and driving on normal roads. I'll take the BOV off and go to the dealer soon I guess, the only thing that won't be stock is some of the clamps around the BPV. How should I explain this? At high rpm's the engine is pinging/knocking? I"m kinda hesitant to show them the dyno video. Thanks for any other help.

Mike

Wow, you have more torque to the wheels than advertised at the crank.(boobs)

My car sometimes pings at higher rpm's when its warm out w/ varying brands of 91 octane..and i'm all stock except for injen cai, and i got the reflash...

as devil stated in one of the guys that pinged on the agile auto dyno...since then i have hit sunoco 94 octane or shell 93.....if u live up by ngp i hit the sunuco by whitemarsh blvd and rt. 40 ...it sby my gf's house and 1.84 for 94 octane aint bad......i honestly cant hear the pingin from inside the car but i figured the bad crown i had in the tank from the meet was the reason for it.....btw u shoudl hit up one of our meets man.....or hit me up.....i wanna get a lil mini bmore meet goin :) do u live around aberdeen or around ngp ?!?

AutoBox you have PM. I'm guessing Corksport's Tuner Computer would probably smooth this problem out right? Even though it is not tunable on the fly, I was just looking for something to slap on, not be too invasive (easy to installl/uninstall) but produce safe, reliable power. Does anyone have the tuner computer yet?

I cant hear anything from the engine, what does the pinging sound like? Also, I hear you guys talking about Sunoco, is that a gas station, because I have never heard of it before, and everything in Colorado is 91, I would like to run 94.

Matt

You can hear the pinging start around 15 seconds into the video. It's a metallic rattling type of sound.

Sunoco is a gas station. Regular premium gas here in NJ is 93 octane, Sunoco also sells 94 octane.

Thanks for pointing it out for me, it sucks that Colorado has to be gay like that, or atleast around my area, and not have anything above 91.

One more question, what would make the hp numbers just while the torque numbers stay relatively the same.

Matt

The HP numbers are very close as well. Except for the one green graph, which is a few HP low, but if you look at it there's holes in the graph, and it also looks like they backed off the throttle early, which would explain the lower peak #.

yeh i switche dto sunoco... its hard to find one at times...so its either sunuco 94 or shell 93 where ever i find one......
