STi vs. EVO

an evo in stock form does feel like it's choking up top. first and second don't feel as bad because of the G forces the AWD lets you experience. when you get to third you're mostly just driving a normal car and are feeling the engine pulling. i didn't really notice how bad it was until i uncorked it with an exhaust and a tune. the 9 should be a little better because of the mivec cam but an exhaust and tune is the first mod you should do on an evo

thanks for the feedback guys... i agree with almost everything you guys are saying. i like the look of the STi better, but the evo has its strong points too. when i hit the throttle on the STi, it was like nothing i ever experienced... this was with 4 people in the car too..... the evo just seemed weak. the turbo is load i guess but it doesn't make up for the fact that the engine is sooooooooooo much smaller than an sti something like something like 200cc smaller than the STi's. maybe more

so im going to try to drive a different evo 9 and see if i get the same response... and this time ill push it harder.
No problem! See I thought you were talking about an X, not Evo 9...I like those but if it's not an X then screw it get an STi fool!
(cryhard) (rofl2) (lol2) (rlaugh) (lol)(lol)(lol) (rlaugh) (rlaugh) (lol2) (lol2) (rofl2)
I thoroughly enjoy this post.

this can be said for the sti as well.

honestly the op needs to decide what he wants.

i know for sure that the evo recaro seat are fantastic for a track car but try riding in one for more than a few hours would have your back wanting to kick you in the balls...the sti here is a little more forgiving in the comfort area. plus the fit and finish on the sti seems to be a little better, honestly not by much, than the evo.

i have driven both an sti ( several actually ) and have ridden in 1 evo 9 that was heavily modded in the suspesion dept. ( thing handled like a go cart!) but would kill you on a trip and then drove a stockish evo8 ( tbe and a tune ) the evo was a blast to drive. i really liked it! but all the sti's/wrx's are more comfortable. i would pick an sti/wrx to drive everyday to work over an evo. both can be made fast ( the sti will cost you more to seriously mod though )

evo for a track car
sti for a well rounded daily driver

also just an fyi the sti and wrx ( premiem model if i remember right ) interior including the seats are exactly the same. one is covered in grey/black and the other in the blue alcarta (sp?)

i would get an evo just because we dont have any evos cept for x's up here in canada ):

Traded my msp in for a 2005 STi, I loved it while i had it... A little too much love 3 tickets in 4 months... I had to get rid of it due to a spun bearing

sti motors are strong right up to ~375hp and then things go wrong...motor....tranny....transfer case the list is quite large and expensive. the evo on the other hand can in some cases hit upward of 450hp closer to 500hp without any major isues.

all in all if you just want a stock useable fun yet comfy AWD platform....STI. if you intend to take it to the performance side of things with aftermarket help...EVO. i've been around a lot of evo and sti owners and this seems to be the general consensus.

ok well thats good to know about how to build them...

what im thinking of doing is first getting a TBE, intake and a tune, (like in the first week). then after that id go for coilovers (if the car's previous owner didn't already put them on). eventually i would need a FMIC, but i know that the EVO comes with that...
i think the main reason i like the STi more is because of the slip diff settings... the EVO looks better, but the interior was all plastic like a ford focus... and it just didn't feel good to drive, but like i said i need to drive a different one before i write off the possibility of an EVO 9

just in case if i didnt make it clear before im looking for a 05-07 STi or a 05-06 EVO or EVO MR

ok lets all be serious get a ms6 :) lol o but between them 2 i would get a evo you can build them to be crazy fast a bigger aftermarket and king of the awd turbo compact sedan world

STi changed fronts in 07. the 05-06s are the say then 07 has the newer front end. not sure about the evos.. I like the 05-06 body style better then the 07s

i also love the look of the evo, but am in love with the sound of sti's engine. the thing that would be my make or break point would be what the future holds for the car. if you intend to modify it.....although both have endless options...the evo comes in first. it's actually cheaper and easily more capable of decent horsepower with minimal stress. sti motors are strong right up to ~375hp and then things go wrong...motor....tranny....transfer case the list is quite large and expensive. the evo on the other hand can in some cases hit upward of 450hp closer to 500hp without any major isues.

This is not true! there are pleny of 400 + sti's running stock blocks...hell there are even 9 second and faster sti's running a completely stock trans and diffs! the evo is weaker in the trans dept. but has a better engine internals than the sti but comeon...were talking 400-500 hp here!

hell there are stock wrx's making that much power on the stock block. no forged internals either.

while the evo will go faster due to the vastly larger turbo than the sti has stock i think i prove my point.

edit:

honestly who cares about dyno #'s! all that matters is what happens at the track. that's where the true power of the car is shown. dyno's can be vasty different from day to day and car to car.

i used my evo for a DD for 2.5 years. for the most part it was fine. the only time it hurt was the few trips i took from CT to DC. i think it's like 6 hours each way. that was a little rough.

what im thinking of doing is first getting a TBE, intake and a tune, (like in the first week).
you should probably do some research before deciding that to make sure those are the appropriate first things to mod. IIRC the stock intake on the evo isn't one of the first things that needs replacing unless you want it to go vroom vroom

then after that id go for coilovers (if the car's previous owner didn't already put them on).
then why bother to get an MR? you're replacing its best feature

eventually i would need a FMIC, but i know that the EVO comes with that...
why would you need an FMIC? because it looks pretty? research then decide on mods. you don't even know what car you're getting yet you already know the proper mod path?

if you want a showy car with a bunch of s*** parts thrown at it that probably don't work well together but people will think you're super cool because you say you have things like an FMIC and an intake then you might as well get a civic. you can do everything in the world to it cheap

i think the main reason i like the STi more is because of the slip diff settings...
shall i say research again or is it redundant by now? the STI's DCCD is virtually identical in function to the evo's ACD which came in the 05+ evo. i have no idea what a "slip diff setting" is

the EVO looks better, but the interior was all plastic like a ford focus... and it just didn't feel good to drive, but like i said i need to drive a different one before i write off the possibility of an EVO 9
the SSL package makes the evo much nicer. doesn't change the dash but leather wrapped seats are very nice. though the alcantara on the 9 are nice as well

just in case if i didnt make it clear before im looking for a 05-07 STi or a 05-07 EVO or EVO MR
first, the 05 evo was an 8. second, there is no 07 evo.

seriously research your cars and your mods. don't buy something just because everyone says it's cool and you want to impress others. buy the best thing out there for you. figure out what you want to do with it mod wise, learn about the car and then plan appropriately. don't be another ricer with more money than brains or taste.

well i dont want a FMIC because it looks cool, actually i dont remember saying i want either car just so im looked at..... FMIC can handle more power down the road when i do more mods to it. and as for doing research, both of my friends that have STi's say exhaust, intake and tune is a GOOD way to go to start off.... NOT THE ONLY WAY....

and for coilovers i was still talking about the STi. the only thing i would do the the EVO is TBE and a tune. all three evo ive looked at already had intakes on them.

thakns for the ideas though

Personally, I would go for the STI. I've riden in Evo's a bit, and have 2 friends with STI's (on 05 and an 07). The STI is just hella fun to drive, and I love being able to cut someone off with the wheel turned, a feat very hard to accomplish in my ms3. STI > EVO, IMHO, with the exception of the aborted 08+ STI.
