STI or MazdaSpeed3

unless he is paying cash the 2k is minimal.
huh? $2,000 is $2,000 regardless of how you pay for the car. i'm guessing you're talking in terms of monthly payments and $2,000 not being a big difference there but that's the absolute wrong way to think about how much a car costs

What do you do for a living at 19 that you can afford 16k-18k for a car??? No offense intended but my kids at 20 and 18 can't afford to do this... they're both in college and have jobs too... Your not getting any help from Mom and Dad? (rlaugh) Anyway, good luck on whatever you get...

i dunno i bought my own car at 20 used 06 mz3 with 12k miles on her then a year later turned around got my 09speed3 sport. i don't goto school, but im a little more responsible than most 21 year olds you'll meet haha. so who knows man?

I was 19 when I bought a new Si, no, mom and dad do not pay for anything for me, I was in also paying them $350 a month in rent as well.

No college, just hard/good work ethic that got me into a manger's salary.

I'd go MS3, I'd rather have to worry about smoking turbos over trannies going out and spun rod bearings.

Make sure the STI's "wear and tear" isn't too severe. Depending on who the owner was, they probably drove it hard often. Not to say that the speed 3 hasn't been driven hard but its got less miles. I was going to get an 06 evo a year ago but I drove it and the clutch was slipping and something was vibrating in the rear axle lol. If the STI seems like its in good condition though STI has my vote.

the sti's suspension seems messed up and makes a lot of noise lol but i know the speed3 wasnt driven hard because the owner is a friend of mine so as far as the mods i know its fine.

i would get a used ms3 but not from your friend.
according to edmunds.com, a 2007 ms3 sport with 21k miles in average condition can be had for $14k in a private party transaction. in this economy you can probably get it for under $14k.

Kelly Blue Book value for your area (I used a 98607 zip code) is $16,755 private party value, sport model in good condition. Lower miles is usually better but, it really depends how the car was taken care of and driven. Plus you still have some warranty on the 07'... right?

if he has $4k in mods he no longer has a warranty. or it at least the powertrain and suspension parts of the warranty no longer apply, and those are the important parts.

if i were buying a car with aftermarket parts (though honestly i never would, not for a DD anyways) i'd take their actual value and cut it at least in half if not more. also labor does not factor in at all so it should just be the value of the parts themselves. if the previous owner was too stupid to put the parts on himself then sucks for him. many times i've seen cars with aftermarket parts be listed for less than if they were stock. so if a fair price for a stock MS3 in similar condition in your area is $17k i think that one might be worth $18k and only that much because you know the guy selling it.

though i have to say you are the ideal buyer for a modified import so maybe it's worth more to you. out of curiosity why is your friend selling?

Yeah I offered him 18 but he wouldn't do it lol the lowest he will go is 18.5. And he is selling cuz he wants to build his galant vr4 which are actually really rare.
