I called my local discount tire today looking to get an estimate on a snow set up and they said that they did not have a steel wheel that matched my offset and lug pattern. is this true? what do you guys run for a winter set up and how much should i expect to pay. I would appriciate any input.
Thanks
John

I wonder if it's that they don't carry them or that they can't get them. It's frequently common for tire/wheel stores to not be able to get cheap steel wheels once the winter season actually starts. If they can't get them you can always check some place like tirerack.com. Buy your wheels there (assuming they're available) and/or tires as well. If not then you could still take the wheels to DT and have tires mounted on them locally. That way you'd also be covered by their damage/repair/rotation policy.

I just got a set of 16" winter tire/wheels for my '10 M3 from TireRack.com for about $800. This incl. alloy wheels and Dunlop Winter Sport 3D tires. For steel wheels it is about $120 less. They come mounted and balanced, so you just need to put them on yourself or have them installed by your local service. I spent an extra $75 and picked up a floor jack and torque wrench to install them myself instead of paying for the swap twice a year.

winter wheels

Winter of '09 I purchased a set of steel 16" wheels, mounted with Blizzak WS-60's from tire rack. I run the 17" alloys with summer rubber April through November, and commute 60 miles daily. The Blizzaks deliver astounding traction, great ride, and are reasonably quiet. At present rate of consumption, the Bridgestones look like they've got another couple winters in them. End of winter '10, still in multicell compound, negligible wear. One of the best investments I've made, very satisfied.

I've got my stock 17's in storage after getting a dent in one. Just have to get around to having it straightened. I bought a set of Black and Brushed Aluminums to replace them. Ended up using them through part of winter...not a good choice. I'm having them re-anaodized or powder coated. Picked up a set of 16's half way through january and went with Blizzack's too. Big big difference. Also check Ebay, Steelies are on there all the time, but they run about the same as a cheap set of Aftermarkets from Discount or Belle Tire.
