Starting problem and CEL

Hey everyone, thought I'd run this through here and see if anyone has had this problem yet.

I've had my MS3 since Dec of last year and have not had any problems at all until about 3-4 weeks ago. The problem started whenever I would fill the car up with gas. Basically I usually drive until I'm pretty low, right before or right when the gas light comes on, but not beyond that since I figured out that you can't get very far after the gas light comes on anyways. I would then start the car and it would immediately die. I did this a few times and the car would barely turn over and stall. I then started it a few times and ran the RPMs up to 2-3K for a few seconds and let off and it would stall. Only after running it constant for 2-3K for about 10 seconds or so would it go back to normal and not stall.

I would then drive the car and it seemed normal, no starting issues at all after that. Then I got gas again a few days later and the same exact thing happened. I let it go one more time and the same thing happened ... but no starting issues at all except when I filled up.

So I bring it to the dealer and they have my car for a few days since they can't figure it out. They end up checking the spark plugs and found a couple fouled ones so they replaced all of them and they also flashed my ECU with the cold-start fix. The car then didn't have the problem at all until just a couple days ago when I filled up and this morning I got a CEL finally ... never got one at all since I have owned the car including the problems that started 3-4 weeks ago.

I have an appt. next week so they can do the ECU recalls and look at this problem again. They told me that they would probably replace the fuel pump if the problem came back.

Sorry you have having this trouble. It has nothing to do with how low you run your gas. After the light comes on, you have at least 50 miles, probably more before you actually are out of gas. Check how much you fill - the tank is over 14 gallons and I'll bet from your description you never put in more than about 12.

How do you pull the code? It happened today on the way to work so I didn't have time to mess with it. Car seems fine though.

Yeah, the last fillup was just under 12 gallons. It is weird that the problem only occurs after a fillup though. Never have starting problems on any other start, cold or hot.

Go to Auto zone and have them read the code with an OBD II reader. Its one of those Auto zone or Discount auto parts...I think its discount...

Okay, just made a run to AutoZone and this is what came out:

P2187
Definition - System Too Lean At Idle Bank 1
Explanation - Failed MAF
Probable Causes - Low fuel pressure, vacuum leak on engine, failed H02S

Sweet soudns definitely like your MAF is bad and or your fuel pump needs to be replaced. Just curious, but what octane of gas are you putting in the car?

Have you modded the car in any way?

That code is a California specification code for emissions. Sounds like you have a bad purge valve. I sure with the other crap they will replace all hoses and fuel pump...

the purge valve is part of the new recall, right?

I used to have the same problem with a 93 integra, never did figure out what the problem was, I thought it was just the cars way of saying she loves me

hey i got an 08 mazda 3 and when i bought it this week i had gas tank problems and it was brand new, so i had to go back and get it fixed basically if u still have warranty take it to dealer and get it fixed thats my suggestion

Okay, got my car back. They are replacing the purge valve solenoid for the CEL. They told me that the gas tank is getting too full and that is why it is having starting issues only when filling up ... which I am calling BS as they said this is a "normal" issue. I will entertain them though and only put 11 gallons in next time I fill up since I have to bring it back in when the purge valve gets in anyways.

when they say your filling it up to much they are probably trying to say you are topping it off... with the california emissions crap you can't top it off when the gas stops the first time just end it there... it was a common problem on the 04 mazda 3s i think its strange they are still dealing with that issue.

I know what they mean, but I never top off the tank (which I told them many times). So I guess you have to guess how much gas and stop before the pump stops ??? That's not normal. But I will stop short next time and see what happens, so at least I know if that is the problem or not.
