Starting Over

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine, Warren (you'll hear his name alot here). If you don't know Warren, he is the guy who now has a 570 horsepower Miata. I put all my pride aside and asked him a lot of questions regarding my build. He told me some good news and some bad. The only real *bad* news was the money. But the more I think about it the more pissed I get at myself for even thinking "THAT'S TOO MUCH MONEY." I knew it wouldn't be chump change to build the K-Speed.

I don't think I'm going to go with the Hydra EMS (Flying Miata). Right now I'm steering towards the MoTeC. The only downside to this is the MoTeC is going to run me about $4,000 in the hole. Also, it's not something anyone can just tune. He said it's a tough system to learn in full.

He has Tony Pallo (http://www.t1racedevelopment.com/) do most of the tuning for him. Supposedly this guy lives for the MoTeC system. Since this guy is a professional at tuning this EMS it's a tune and go. In other words, he gets the job done right, no going back and what not and having to tune 8342758437583 times before it's right. *If* I do the MoTeC I'll be running the M4.

Also, the turbo has changed since I have talked to him. Hell, a lot has changed since our conversation. He also gave me a contact for a exhaust manifold, teheh. Things are moving, but slowly.

My injector purchase has put me out $703 which kinda pisses me off since Warren was like "..I could have gotten them a lot cheaper."

I'm still a little on the fence about the EMS. I know for a fact if I call Keith (FM) and start talking about some things he'll talk-up the Hydra. It's how things work. Warren doesn't seem to pleased with them right now so I'm not sure where I want to go as of now. He has a ton of connections and right now I'm just taking his hand and letting him lead.

I also asked about the tranny and what not on his Miata. So far he hasn't had to replace a tranny, differential or anything like that, I was impressed. I figured the first thing I would have to beef up would be the transmission.

So far, so good...

(EDIT) This post was me thinking outloud. Welcome to my thought process. Most of the things said were not fully thought out. Get used to it, it happens a lot.

Yeah, Motecs have a great rep and all, but can you really justify a $4K price tag? And is it PnP? From what I know of the Hydra, it seems like a good setup. Unless there's some limitation to the Hydra (or some major bugs), I think it would be foolish to spend 2-3x as much for the Motec which you can't even tune yourself. :-/

Give me a laptop and I can do it (somewhat). Start blurting out the terms and I have no idea what you are talking about.

Manifold Air Pressure sensor?

Personally, I keep looking at the Megasquirt... its on the cheap (about $300), i can build it myself (yays!), and tune it myself(more yays!).

only thing is I gotta grow the balls to jump in head first with this kinda major mod... that and figure out how to pass smog, since MS (nor hydra for that matter from what i understand..) are odbII, and out here in nevadaland, they only smog by plugging into the odb2 plug and making sure theres no codes.

want the easy solution? You made a 'pigtail' adaptor that plugs into the stock harness and into the megasquirt. When you're ready for emissions, swap the stock ECU back in.

I am kind of jumping in this thread here as I rarely go to this forum anymore but... What the hell is going on here?

I know people personally who have gotten 300hp from a stock block BP and piggyback ECUs, that's good enough to pop a 12.9 if you can stick it right. At the same time I know a guy in Orlando who is dancing right on the 13.8/14.1 line ALL MOTOR with a stock block BP and IRTBS and AEM.

You have no idea what 400hp is in a NB. Good luck with this build, you're going to need it.

DFKGJS:KGE!@$

Car is literally sitting in water..

It has been raining for days. Also, I just got over food posioning, yay! Injectors should be here by today. Seriously, if I can't get this thing rolling anytime soon, I'm just going to say eph it and send it off to John Long to start the motor work.

hopefully the water isnt in the cars?

and boo for food poisoning. throwing up for days isnt what I would consider a "good time"

I saw the PnP from MS on th DIYautotune site...I'm seriously considering that...instead of the GReddy EMS...but we'll see where my alliance lies.
Oooooh the dramaz!

Well, some water is in the car. I have a leak..BLEH.

Although, that one I just have to tough out, the first Miata had a leak.
