Starter choice?? Stupid Car!!

Starter choice

My starter is going kaput on me, and Im looking to replace it. Before anyone asks, yes I did service the battery connections, and unfortunately that did not solve the problem. The car will occasionally simply refuse to start (no partial turn-over, no click, nothing). Getting under the car and hammering the starter solves the problem right away though.

Im looking at a USA Industries replacement starter, as they are reasonably priced, but for my 2001 protg they show 2 different starters; a unit # S1493, and S2766. Im guessing the different engines available take different starters, does anyone know which unit will fit a 2.0L 5 speed??

Lousy car!!!!!

So I swapped in a rebuilt starter, and now the car will at least turn over without me having to crawl under it and hammer the starter, but now it will only intermittently turn over.

Half the time I get nothing, and half the time it starts without any issue at all. I thought maybe bad connections so I cleaned the battery poles, replaced the negative terminal, and upgraded to 4 gauge ground cable (even added another ground source, connected to the block), but still the problem persists.

Any ideas?
Maybe the rebuilt starter is no good?
Is there a starter relay I should replace?

OK, so now I have replaced the starter, both battery terminals, upgraded my ground cables, and just now I eliminated the switch that allows the car to start only when the clutch is in (thinking that crappy plastic switch might be my culprit) and still the problem persists; intermittently the car will click once with each key turn, but will not turn over.

So now Im thinking either the key tumbler its self is making a poor connection, or possibly the starter solenoid. Can anyone tell me what the symptoms of a faulty starter solenoid are?

If it's faulty you will be back under there hammering away soon. Get a brand new one. I just changed my friends on his jeep, he bought a rebuilt one for 40 dollars less, I told him he shouldve bought new one.

Ive now re-replaced the starter and my problem is gone. It was definitely a pain in the ass having to pull and install this stupid thing twice to solve the problem, but at least its done now and I can put this sucka back up for sale.
