SS AFC installed, now it wont connect??

i say, but a acer laptop from online for 300$-500$ and it would be a perfect tuning laptop, thats what im going to use mine for, its small and lightweight (for meatleast) and if you do buy a Acer Aspire 3620 i can sell you a 1 gig ram upgrade that i have laying here haha

So i bought two new serial to usb cables. Ones a Belkin and the other is IOGear. Tried both and still got the same error. So it wasn't the cable.
Tonight i will borrowing mt friends dell. I will install all the drivers and the R4 software. And see if it will work. Any more help will be great appreciated.

do you have access to a computer with the serial connector you can borrow? if you know that works, then your having problems with the usb to serial connector cable.

personally i was having alot of problems with the conversion cable when i first bought the unit.

Hmmm not that I know of, maybe my friends dell has it. It would have to be a pretty old laptop to have a serial connector pysically on it.

alot of current dells do have it. since i hated that stupid usb to serial connector cord, i had a old laptop lying around and i notice it had a serial connector adapter. so it needed a new hard drive, bought it from ebay for like 15 bucks and its running microsoft 2000. it does not have a battery, so i leave it in the garage and only have the splitsecond program on it and my friends wideband controller program on it. thats it and works great!

i would find out what code(s) it's throwing first. i had a problem with my v2 when i first got it and it threw a CEL on immediately for a MAF code. i had all the wiring correct, software/drivers installed but still had an issue. i started testing the afc unit itself and found the unit had an open on the MAF circuit internally. i sent it off to split second where they had it for over a month and told me there was nothing wrong with it, they said it was my wiring. when i received the unit back, i retested it and found continuity on the MAF circuit. reinstalled it and it's been running great ever since. i believe i originally received a dud unit and they are to proud to admit there was a problem with their product. personally, i believe their customer service is subpar at best. i hope my previous experience might help you with your situation. good luck.

check all pins, get a usb1.1 to serial ( apparently they only work ) ditch mac, and try every com port that r4 has optioned, make sure ignition is on but car not running

Okay. I got my hands on a Windows XP laptop. Installed the drivers and R4 software. Put the keys in the ON position, but not started. Connected to the AFC then Computer then opened the R4 software, AND still got that same error when connecting to the ecu threw the correct COM port. I again rechecked the wires and for kicks tried re soldering the ttap to the power wire (Pin97). Tried again, same error. Tried changing the COM ports from 1 threw 8. Error again. I then made a new customer profile, i thought maybe that customer file (winterfmic) was causing the problem and still got that god damn error. I have now completely run out of ideas on what is causing it not to connect to the R4 software.

Is there something blatantly obvious i am missing?

Im about to take the whole thing out if i can cannot get it fixed. I need my car by Saturday to drive home since im on reading week and using my parents nice warm garage. And maybe try again in the summer when i have lots and lots of time. Anyways im out of ideas.

Ken could you send em the same contact information. I installed this FTC1 and I was trying to load up the R4 program to change the mapping. and Its following the same exact pattern as this thread. I know all the wires are connected and drivers are installed. ..... I am at the same exact position TSchiewe is at except I have been using XP the whole time.

Im having this same issue with my ss afc. Its got to be the laptop not being able to run the program properly. Its funny i bought the system from a buddy on a local forum and when we plugged it up to his dell it worked fine. When i get home and used my laptop it gave me the same error as mentioned on this thread. Also, the software he gave me was not working. So i downloaded the software Terbow uploaded on this site. This is a really weird issue. It could be the software or the laptop. I doubt its the wire connections. TSchiewe did you solve the problem?

I'm work in the IT field. Its most likely PC issues. check your antivirus. Norton + Mcafee Internet security love to mess with everything. Also could be the cable. I have seen many USB to serial cables work sporadically. I hooked up my laptop to my AFC first shot.

^^Thanks for the advice. I contacted the previous owner and there was some software for the cable i didnt receive so ill get it from him and see if that works.

The solution to this problem is as follows:

DO NOT use the ECU power and ground for the AFC. Use the +12V switched ign wire in the steering column for power, and in the pass. footwell there is a grounding bolt, use that for the black wire on the AFC. I had the identical problem you are having on both my P5 when I installed the AFC, and last night on Glen's car (FunkyBuddha) when I installed it as well. Changing to seperate powers and grounds than the ECU ones that were included in the diagram solved both my CEL, and my inability to connect to the unit. Do that and I guarantee you will fix it.

It's a big thick blue wire on my car, but it changed for '03 I believe. A test light and 5 mins works wonders.
