i just think that the tranny might have problems w/ breaking gears and forks.
and the engine being able to hold alot of power. i think that the rods migh give if the car is running more boost then stock(MBC) and the rods might just colapse...but that is what i think the week points of the engine might be.
did you read the scc article about the engine? and the tranny is as good as you'll get from a cheap fwd car. it'll last far longer than ours under the power

what is so diff. about the srt tranny exept the lsd?
"SRT-4 features an NVG T-850 heavy-duty five-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. It is controlled by a shifter with a large satin-silver knob for quick, positive gear changes. The heavy-duty clutch helps route torque to equal-length half-shafts driving the front wheels."-dodge web site

here's a link to the SCC article where they tore apart the engine and tranny and raved about how beefy everything was......doesn't appear this will be a weak point for us.

some quotes from that article:

"What we found is a ridiculously strong-looking engine that should survive many a quarter mile."

"With a short deadline on engine development, there was no time to prove the durability of low-cost, marginal-strength parts. Where typical engine development teams would spend time whittling away pennies finding the least expensive design that could meet durability targets, the turbo 2.4 team just threw in stronger parts and more expensive materials, cost be damned."

"The cast-iron block looks extremely stout, with a closed deck on top and a very strong split crankcase. Rather than individual main bearing caps, or even caps joined by a main bearing girdle, the block simply extends past the crank and is split right down the crank centerline. The bottom half (called the bedplate) incorporates all the main bearing caps. In addition to improved strength, this design offers reduced noise and vibration, so it's becoming fairly common in modern engine design."

"The SRT-4 drag teams are rumored to be making between 800 and 1200 hp on the stock crank (and stock block and bedplate), so we figure it's strong enough."

the transmission is taken out of the Stratus R/T V6 sedan. The engine and transmission are a very good match. The design team (PVO) worked at making this engine stand up to the kind of mods they themselves would do if it were there car. You have to understand, the PVO guys are as far from bean counters as you can get in the R&D segment of the automotive world. They came in early and under budget with the SRT-4. The original prototype called for a s/c 2.0. They realized that they already had a 2.4 turbo in production in foreign markets. They took that motor, and asked "what would make this motor perfect?" Then they designed. This was the result

i just dont get it thow....this car is way more of a car for the $$$. like the STi and EVo.
its just that is has sutch strong parts but the cost remains to be low, i dont see how dodge is making this happend unless they are loosing $$$ or cutting back on quality....im confused

it just kind of buggs me that they didnt make it a little better by installing automatic rear windows and mabe a couple of tiny hydraulic accuators for the trunk instead of some cheap ass springs.

exterior design dosent really do anything for me but i love the interior

do you think it costs them 21k to make the car snowman? obviously not. they just aren't overcharging like most dealerships do.

i wouldnt be suprised if they were producing it at a loss. that car is a great marketing tool. probably gets tons of regular neons sold just by relation

I think I can shed some light on the subject
The base motor has been in production for about 9 years. That in and of itself saved a ton. The R&D that went into the block and crank was already common knowledge to the PVO guys. The aftermarket support for the 420a engine (which the 2.0 and 2.4 fall into the same category) was already tested and proven. Essentially all the PVO guys had to do was to make improvements to the block, get the right mix of innards of the engine, and develop a turbo manifold that was cheaper to manufacture and allow quicker spoolups It wasn't all that hard.

I agree with you on the hydraulic arms. I think they should have done it the same as the Stratus and Intrepid. But power rear windows for windows that only go down about a third? That's wasteful IMO

i think ill have to go and test drive one tomorow...DAMB YOU

Good luck getting a local dealer to let you just "test drive" one. They are hard to get. There are dealers though that won't make you pay anything over sticker to get one. Trust me, if you drive one you'll like it. And if you do end up liking one, then you're going to want to order one, or get one that has less than 10 miles on it. You DON'T want one that the sales people (or customers for that matter) raggin on. When I got mine it had 2 miles on it :D

im not planing on buying one, i just want to test drive it and see how the car is....my next car will be an impreza w/ an STi engine and tranny...or just an STi.
i cant stand having FWD, it sucks in UT. plus i like doing flatspins in the snow in subarus.

what dealerships in SLC have them do u know?
