interested if people will still have them after the warrenty runs out. I will stick with asian cars for now on. Just my $.02
 
alot of the 03' owners still have theirs, and are all running strong... its got a really good engine/transmission.

here is my review. first of all, I have to agree with almost everything mazdaspeedchick said. I am planing on gettiong a new car and test drove an 04 Srt-4.

ENGINE: it is definatelly fast, when that turbo spoooled up, it set u back in your seat (remember that I have a 2000 DX 1.6L). my sister had a 97 neon, and it was a POS. problems every day, but might be different 'cause of different engine.

LOOKS: there is no comparisson with the MSP, but IMO, It looks pretty good, definatelly get it lowered. I like the gauges and boost gauge, they match pretty well. the FMIC gives it a mean look together with the bumper.

OVERALL: IMO, I think it's the best bang-for-the-buck powerwise and it's good looking.


I haven't decided yet between the SRT-4 and an 02 WRX, but I am leaning to the SRT. I still got time until I sell the car to decide, help me choose.

the thing I find funniest is the statement "it has so much more potential" than a protege....

IMHO thats a total joke...

I would bet 95% of the people who say that will never go out of the MSP's potential... and we all know the SRT isn't magical and that some otherwise stock MSP's have thrashed them with only a MBC... and if you think this is cheating dont forget that the SRT has a higher stock boost level... so I consider it only leveling the playing field.

NOT TO MENTION, my car, when done will smoke 99% of srt's out there... and look better 100% of the time (IMO)
 
The functional hood scoop or w.e its called.
This really isn't functional unless you do the airbox mod.
Better gas mileage overall -cost me only 18 bucks to fill it w/super @ 2.10/gal
9 gallon tank in the SRT vs. 14 gallon tank in the MSP. My msp gets roughly 24 since I've owned it, the SRT got 20 the first few boostless weeks I owned it, now, with a little fun it will drop to about 14 mpg.
Taller gearing on the tranny.
Seems almost too tall for me. I find myself on the freeway in fourth a lot.
Braking Power & of course the red f&r calipers
My MSP with Bobcats will outbrake my SRT.
Dealership honoring warrantys with a (slighty)modded car.
Well, this really depends on where you are. There have been a lot of warranty problems lately with the SRT to the point that the warranty on the 05s is half of what it is on the 04s.


Good write up though. you are sure right about the steering wheel! Looks like it came out of an 80's Dodge Ram pickup...

hahahaha.... thanks man! i really didnt want to part out the car, but i was kinda forced to do it. anyways on to the review on the srt4.....

first off i bought my 2004 srt4 about a week ago. i have 260 miles and i am beating the s*** out of it while it's in break in period.....hehehe

con-well first thing i noticed is that the srt dosent have a good turning radius. my p5 could bust a b**** anywhere.

plus-power is about on par with my msp5 fully moded (best time in the p5 is 13.9 @ 102) tranny in the srt is ******* AWESome!!!! shifts really nice & smooth, no notch ass shifts like the p5. this is stock vs modded p5

con-the wing really gets in the way sometimes. i think i might trade it for a lower model neon wing. this car has way to many blund spots....

plus- seats & int some people think the srt4 looks cheap inside.... but i personally LOVE the seats and full int. yes, it's simple but the seats do an awesome the job of holding you in place.

con- the srt motor seems to have a problem with blowby. with 250 miles i pulled off the t/b to intercooler tube to upgrade with a hardpipe and there was oil in the pipe. seems a few others have had this same issue. i bought a oil catch can so problem will be solved soon.

plus- srt4 tranny gears ROCK!!!!!! i dont even have to use 5th on the freeway. this car can easly go 150+ stock.

plus- srt4 has a very smart and complex pcm... it boost a certain psi per gear to get better traction. the srt4 is WAY easier to drive than a modded turbo p5 or msp. it seems as if the srt4 wants to go WOT or no trottle. hehehhe

con- handling is not as bad as most people make it out to be. i got some energey susp end links and some tein s springs im going to install this weekend to help the body roll.

plus- the srt4 motor is very easly modded. i can easly get 260-270whp on stage 0 ecu with some of the right bolt-on's.

with all this said.... i really like both cars!!!!!;)

i think the srt4 get's hated on a lot from people or other car owners.
the car is a great value and seems to be as of right now the fastest fwd production car in the u.s till this date.

The SRT DOES have more power potential, it has a better motor. But again, this isn't a MSP vs SRT thread.

^ yep he's right. stock srt4 block & tranny= bullet prof!!!!!!! a guy i know out here in cali has over 500+ whp out of his stock block, air box, axles, tranny...ect.. he was the one who ran the sr20 back a few months ago. he running 11.1 @ 132 with slicks.... he should be into 10's soon. (shocked)

Ihave to agree...they are some of the cockiest owners around where I live. all the stupid ones are highschool kids who think they are god cuz they can go fast in a straight line. This one kid is talking s*** to a Supra and FD owner...both run low 13s and he doesnt even have a 04 SRT-4 he has an 03 and he think he can take them on. "FD is a legend and like all Legends its day its up" lol his quote

you can say the same thing for a lotus elise, no roof,no stero, cheap looking interior with no power window, except that thing is one of the best handeling cars in the world and it still decently fast in a stright line (13.1)....best part is that the little thing pulls 1.04gs...over 1g!

[rant] I hate it for a simple fact that alot of the owners I talk to are complete assholes because they think they drive Ferraris...yes the car is fast and is a good deal for the price...but by no means is it a super machine and capable of everything...this one kid was telling me it has topend...it can pull corners. and obviously it fast in a stright line. But if you think about it both cars are FWD. and FWD isnt exactly the best for performace purposes. FWD is economical. $20K car you get $20K worth of stuff in it...thats it. Dont say your $20K SRT-4 car can whoop up on lets say a $40K elise (in stright line) cuz the elise is still the better car. Plus I would take the elise over an Neon lookin car. Like the kid who was talking s*** to the FD owner...let see...FD pulls close to 1g, good sloam number and will out handel the SRT-4. PLus its pretty damn fast in a straihgt line...its RWD. It looks alot better...its a proper sports car. This one owner even claimed that the SRT-4 would pull more chicks in over and FD....lol....maybe fit more, but the FD is still alot better looking then a SRT-4. So I dont care if the SRT-4 is capable of running 11 sec or 13 sec stock...I still would take the FD. I would love to see the SRT-4 in SCCA world challenge where a cars overall balance matter more. [rant]

With the SRT-4 vs MSP debate...its just preferences but the fact that both cars are cheap is attracting alot of stoopid owners. There are some MSPeeders out there that are idiots too...just not as much as SRT-4 owners. I still hangout with a bunch of SRT-4 guys but they know that there are people who are giving them a bad name.

You know steve anderson car had 500 hp and we knew what happened at the end. all cars have there limits. Plus 11.1 on a FWD car? Its probally running on some slicks to make up for the lost in tracktion FWD car tend to have at the track. 11.2 thats amazing...but are you gonna use all that power? Waht about the breaks to handel that power...or the inherit flaws of the chasis. There a reason why enzos earns that 11 sec. Lots of people can make cars run fast in a straight line with a good drag racer. I've seen a geo metro run 9s (smoked a Cobra and had flames shooting out)...but is that what cars are ment to do? just go fast in a straight line? pretty amazing it did it on stock tranny and internals but obviously its gonna wear it down...the question becomes how long.

If they didnt make so many SRT-4s I would drive a skittle. Gets good gas milage and very useful for everyday driving. its a good car...both cars are good. But im currently happy with the speed and have no intention on trading it in. next car will be AWD or RWD... ;)

steve's car was VERY poorly tuned for a long time. once it was properly tuned it was still running a fuel piggyback and a MAF signal modifier for air control. at times his motor saw up to 48+psi. he also dragged on falken azenis, the one tire you shouldn't use for drag racing... he ran a 12.xx after his motor blew at the 1/8mile mark.

his motor wasn't the end all power ability question for the srt4's bottom end everyone wants it to be.
 
I know it was poorly tuned but isnt he gonna forge his new engine (I thought he posted about getting new forged goodies for his engine)? Why would he need to forge it if it was so capable...maybe he knows 500 hp is near the limit of the engine? He certainly defunct all the theories about the SRT-4 tranny.
