Splash Guards for the Hatchback

I am planning to order the splash guards next month and have my husband install them. For those of you who have the splash guards, do you feel they are truly functional or more just for looks? My main goal is protection from road debris. Are they difficult to install? It appears the rear will be trickier than the front. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks, my husband is pretty handy and has all the required tools, plus he is a small guy which usually is a good thing when working on cars. Sounds like they will do what I need them to do. It will just take a little patience on his part when he installs the rears.
