The filter is a Wix 51516 for the B3000. The bracket is the Mazda Tribute bracket with the oil cooler mounting on top.

looks like a huge spin on filter. I'm using the filter for the Tribute and its a little smaller. Any reason you went with the B3000 filter?

Wix is good stuff, I pass one of their factory-things every time I head to crowders mountain.

Larger filter provides lower pressure drop over the filter life and adds a little more oil capacity to the system along with more surface area for a little more air cooling. The element is close to twice the size of that tiny factory cartridge, LOL.

I like Wix, its made down here in Gastonia, NC. It has a silicone seal for the bypass and uses real coil springs instead of those silly stamped things you find in a Fram. It is an excellent quality filter for half the price of a Mobil 1 filter.

So this will replace the whole cartrige unit that comes with the ms3?Does it just bolt right up and what is the cost new or used?

I remember on my 97 probe gt I could use a 1991 corvette ZR1 filter in place of the tiny stock filter it was suppose to use.I had to add almost 1 extra Qt of oil more then stock.

Four mounting screws, one screw for the oil cooler, one gasket, one spin-on filter. As easy as changing a motor mount.

~$43 shipped from Mazdapartszone.

This may be a stupid question but, is that filter going to hang down pretty low to the ground? I already had a run over suprise obstacle situation and lucked out on it with only splash shield damage. Just curious cause this seams like a mod I want to do eventually.

It will be a few thousand miles before I change my oil and do the install. I do not think the spin on is much longer, if any , than the stock cartridge housing and certainly not deeper than the oil pan. The stock tribute filter is shorter if you are concerned.

Wow..Thats not a bad price..Has anyone else done this or did you just figure it out?

Oil Filter

K&N Makes a replacement filter for the stock that works great in my friend EVO 9. I am thinking on going to that since my last oil change at the dealership was mazda motor oil 5w 30. and changing to mobile one or syntec.

I think many have done this, but few pictures have been posted. I do not like the cartridge design, especially the plastic end cap that begs to be cross-threaded.

The price is lower than PG because I asked Justin to package it without the Mazda filter. Mazdapartszone is a forum sponsor and Justin Owen is very responsive to requests. My only connection is that of a satisfied customer who will return.

BTW, the K&N filter is just a Mobil 1 filter with a hex welded on the bottom that you pay $2-$3 extra for. I did a lot of research on Wix. There is a reason that Amsoil sells them on their website. I got the Wix filter at O'Reilly's for $5.50.

Looking at your picture, the filter mount is a double sided/dual filter mount...? Right?

And you said that the oil cooler goes on the top side?
What kind of oil cooler? Factory oil cooler, aftermarket?

The PG one is a single filter mount...just trying to figure out why you went with a dual filter mount...

The picture on the PG site is very misleading. It is not an MS3 filter mount, it is a standard 3/6 mount. The picture I posted is an MS3 mount that includes the factory oil cooler connection on the top. The factory oil cooler is a water/oil heat exchanger that mounts on top of the filter mount with a single screw. It includes a built in seal almost like a spin-on filter, but not quite. This is not a "dual filter mount".

Oh I see...

Are their any concerns with removing the factory oil cooler and re-installing it on the new filter mount without replacing the seal on the cooler?

As far as I can tell, the factory oil cooler seal is integral to the oil cooler and is not available as a separate component. It is not listed as a separate part in the factory service manual. I will be checking closely for leaks for a while, but is should be ok.

Any reason you went with Wix over the Amsoil Absolute Efficiency filters? I'm a big fan of amsoil, in fact one of the reasons I switched to the spin on was b/c I wanted to use their filters. Also found it easier to do my oil changes and eventually I am going to use the "sandwich plate" method to hook up oil pressure and temp sensors for some gauges.

If you're down near gastonia, you should check out carolinamazdas.com and come hang out with us in Greenville this saturday!

I am up in Greensboro. I will check out the website, but Saturday my car will be in the shop getting the beaver impact damage repaired and I will be on my way to Shanghai. Thanks for the invite, maybe another Saturday.

I like the Wix construction compared to what is commonly available. A synthetic element would be preferred, but with the larger filter I will get great performance for a fraction of the cost of a specialty filter. I once worked for Dana (owner of Wix) in an oil field company and was impressed with their view of the world.

if you take the time to scroll down, you'll see that there is an option for "mazdaspeed MZR 2.3" which includes the exact same mount you pictured up there, with an OEM filter, that attaches to the cooler/exchanger. you cannot even use the standard 2.3 mount on the mazdaspeed engines, and we're well aware of that, which is why there is an option menu. they are functionally the same part which is cross-posted among the 3, 6, 5, mazdaspeed sections on our site. if were selling standard mounts to DISI customers rather than the ones you had pictured it would not be misleading, it would be stupid and it simply wouldn't work.

Speaking from personal experience, your picture is misleading in the context of an MS3 customer looking for a bracket. I am sure many have looked at the picture on your site thinking that the item would not work with the MS3 in spite of your drop down menu. My advice to you would be:
1. Add a picture of the filter mount with oil cooler feature with explanation.
2. Remove the filter from your kit to improve the price.

I think it is safe to say that most people interested in this kit will not be interested in the Mazda filter. One of the biggest reasons to perform this mod is to be able to use the filter of your choice.

Trust me, I did take the time to "scroll down", I just did not wish to buy a Mazda filter that I did not plan to use.

Please take this as constructive feedback, no flames here.

i have never had any requests or complaints until this date. that said, i certainly appreciate constructive criticism - just not the initial insinuation that i was perhaps sending out improper parts to customers. definetely not the case! (rei)

i'll make some product description changes to the entry and add a "delete filter option", maybe even an option for a K&N, etc.
