2003 mazda protege dx 5 speed 4-cylinder
Speedometer on my 2003 Mazda protege went out about a week ago and haven't had the money to fix it. Now that I do I can't figure out which sensor to be replacing. As you can tell I'm new to actually working on my own car so please no insults. But its 5 speed manual and when I asked at O'Reillys they keep asking which sensor. And there is a HUGE price difference between the two. Can anyone tell me which sensor I should be looking for?

If the car has ABS it could be a wheel sensor, if it doesn't there is a sender on the transmission that can be replaced

I do have abs. So where would I find the wheel sensor? Thank you so much for answering.

Hmmm, on my Protege it is a green connexion on the gearbox just before the differential. You should check it out! the wheel sensor would be on one of the two front wheel. Look for a connexion, can't do much more without a picture. Sorry :(

I think I found it. Sorry its been raining three days straight here so its hard to get everything out of the way to take a picture of it. Should clear up by tomorrow so I will show a picture to make sure I'm looking at the right one. Thank you for your help.
