speedometer and odometer not working

i put a clutch in my 99 protege a little while back. when i was finished with the job everything worked except my speedometer and odometer.
i cant find any grounds that are unplugged, everything is hooked up that i can see. i replaced the vss and still nothing any ideas???(thought)
