my buddy got pulled over a while ago in virginia. he got a summons or something from the cop. it said to call and find out how much the ticket was. so he finally got around to calling today and it was 600 bucks. does anyone kno if the cop is required to provide a radar gun # and/or calibration date of the gun. there is neither of them on the summons and im thinking thats the only was he can get out of it. if anyone knows about the system in VA ir has ne good ways of getting out of tickets please let me kno.

The info needed must be obtained by writing a letter to the court requesting that info, it is normally not on the ticket.

oh ok, so u cant get out of it by basiclly saying how do u kbo what gun was used and if it was calibrated correctly??

There is a way to get out of a ticket in virginia but may not always work. Take it to court, most likely he will lose. Appeal the ticket, and like the day before the appeal change the date, and most of the time the cop will not show and the ticket will get thrown out.

you basically can't fight the calibration. I'm in CJ, I'll tell you this- they are auto calibrated on start up, they test and re calibrate if necessary automatically. On hitting a vehicle with the radar they will get a doppler pitch on how clean the reading is. The cleaner the sound, the more accurate and screwed. if there are other cars around and its hitting you behind a car, it will not read, and the cop wont use the reading because the doppler pitch is off.

you really can't get out of it if you fight on the basis that the gun was off. technology has come too far.

tell your friend its his responsibility he was going that fast and to take it like a man.

(shocked)SIX HUNDRED ******* DOLLARS? How fast was he going? Sixty over?

my friend was caught doing 97/45.
$300.

he must have been doing something incredibly stupid.

I havent seen "normal" infractions that high. He must've killed a cow or something. lol More than likely, he had MANY violations other than speeding that had accumilated. Also, the radar # will not be on the summons. It should be on the original citation. You guys really make this sound more complicated than it is. lol

yea I would like to know what the hell was he doing in order to get a 600 dollar ticket. I got one yesterday and found out its only 135. 70/55

No, he just sped in Virginia. That s*** KILLS. I did 33 over, and had to plea bargain out of 30 ******* days in jail. I wont tell you what I ended up paying instead. VA has some of the strictest traffic laws in the country, let me tell you.

The only way to get out of it is by calibration. If you got hit with LIDAR (laser), you're ******. Who hit him? If it wasnt VA state troopers you can request the calibration records.

Depending on the infraction, if you have a fine that big (which I dont believe, normally something of that $ value would be jail instead), and you take it to court, the judge will most likely sentence you to some time in jail. I avoided prison only because I had a very good lawyer.

The cops are given the benefit of the doubt by the court. You are more likely to lose. Yes, you can ask for a continuance, but why prolong the inevitable? Your court date is just rescheduled for that officers next court duty. I know of very few instances where a cop fails to show.

Go to court...be honest, and take your lumps like a man.

one thing i've heard that works, at least a little in your favor, is to take your car to a shop and have the calibration on your speedometer checked. Have a receipt, and whatever documentation the shop can provide as to if it is off or not. Although being this far over it might not make that big a difference, but it will at least show you're trying to fix things.

hhmm...I still do not see how that damn ticket came to $600. Well first off you have a lil advance being an out of state driver. Chances are if you go to court the officer won't be able to pull your record. And YES I've seen this happen when I went to court for a traffic violation in Va. When I saw this bulls*** I was MAD! I was highly upset that I change my NYC license to a Va one. BIGGEST MISTAKE! Your best bet, get a Lawyer and fight the ticket. You would have a better chance of winning then a resident of Va would.
