Speed Kills

age 20? thats a bit rediculous dont you think

its not the age the matters, each driver is different...there are still 20 yr old people behind the wheel that drive like idiots and/or worse than a 17 or 18 yr old

The problem is people arent prepared adequately. Drivers Ed isnt a requirement, and all a my drivers test included was that I showed I could parallel park, signal properly and stop a f-ing stop sign. I cant tell you how many times drivng down I95 I saw people wildly swerve out of the way of nothing or braking extremly hard to avoid someone who was nowhere near them. Almost hitting me or causing huge accidents

The age should not change the test should. Make people actually be able to react to realworld situations. Make them actually earn their license, and they might be a little more responsible.

exactly, and, there should be some standard across the country in terms of what is tested. My driving test involved driving around a residential block, then parking the car. done. i was 16. however, my rents wouldnt let me get away with just that, i had to do the AAA drivers training as well

When I was in high school I had a 95 Escort Sport. 88hp. And let me tell you, that's plenty for ANY new driver.

Maybe there should be a HP limit on new drivers. Letting a teenager drive an STI is just plain irresponsible.

Yes.....that STi is alot of car and responsibility for a 17-18 year old.

But if taught to respect the car for what it is and what it can do. you can handle the car and be responsible. Not to go on stereotypes but the 2 guys in the article didnt exactly look the part of responsible.

Maybe there shouldn't be, Just because one teen is irresponsible in a STi, does not mean we should have to drive in somewhat dangerously (depending on where you live) slow econoboxes. I can damn sure smash a 115hp Xb just as good as I can an STi. It doesn't matter what you drive its how you drive it.(in this case) I could go on an inbankment at 100mph and have the same results as this wreck did. Bad things would come from limiting teens from buying what they want.

I took a private driving course instead of the public school drivers ED. I also enjoy driving and bought a car that lets me feel as much of the road as possible. I have a calculating and calm mind, often when I am cut off I just slow down to the right speed to be able to pass them with little disruption to myself or my state of mind. I attribute all of those things to my driver status. Unfortunately you can't administer that kind of stuff to everyone. It's not like an exclusive hobby or sport where the people who are doing it love it and are serious about it. It's more like "I have a car now I can go to parties and drive my friends around and get fast food". This stuff will always happen. The unfortunate thing is people who get into accidents by simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, not driver error or being stupid. Otherwise, it's just another form of natural selection.

restrictions....i thought thats what govenors are for.. The 7 cuts out at 118 i believe. The way permits and licenses are issued today is much more of an improvent compared to just 10 years ago. I think there are steps in the right direction, needing a parent in the car, hr's of use, not being able to drive at certain times, these things will help the occurence of teen accidents like speeding coming home from a party, drinking underage and having use of a fast vehicle etc etc. If the law restricts when and how you can use the car, thats a pretty good deterant to start with

You can't make it tougher to get your drivers license. If it becomes tougher and less people pass then that means less people buying cars, which are taxed. Less people buying gas, which is taxed. Less people going to work and earning an income, which is taxed. Less people going out and spending money at the places they visit, which are both taxed if you include the tolls and parking meters. It's all economics.

I'm not grouping all young people together. Some 17 year olds are more mature/responsible than others. Parents play apart as well. I did some stupid things behind the wheel when I was that age. I can say without a doubt that if I had a car that was 300+ HP at that age the risk would have definately been higher for something bad to happen.

Yes a 115 HP car will do 100 MPH(maybe), but that STi will do it in the blink of an eye at a whim. The acceration is a rush and addictive. Its too much for alot of young people to regulate the release of.

Its no different than the kid who died here a few years back on a sport bike. An 18 year old kid who had NEVER riddin a bike before passes his learners test and then proceeds to buy a CBR 900. He had the bike 3 days before he lost control and killed himself. Who in there right mind buys a CBR 900 to learn to ride on? Too much bike for someone who couldn't handle it.

QFT. My first car is protege5 and we all know how slow that thing is. I have one speeding ticket and it took me some effort to get that ticket! ESPECIALLY bikes though you should learn on a smaller engine before you pony up to some thing that might just fly out from under you. I agree that if I have/had a faster car then the protege5 my record and life would not be as well standing.

Yes that would work as well...

exactly, and, there should be some standard across the country in terms of what is tested. My driving test involved driving around a residential block, then parking the car. done. i was 16. however, my rents wouldnt let me get away with just that, i had to do the AAA drivers training as well

...but I'm a bit cynical given how this country's legislature operates.

If we were in Europe that would be exactly what would happen: Better driver training. However in the US you have a better chance applying a sledgehmmer-type change to the law than something that requires people to be educated. I remember my drivers ed was a joke- and continues to be a joke. If I had my way everyone would be required to complete a Skip Barber-type course before getting their license. Parallel parking just doesn't cut it.

Maybe kids shouldn't be given fast cars to drive.

I think the only thing that saved my ass is that I've paid 100% of the cost of my vehicles since the day I turned 16... so when I had a 2 seater sports car at 18 I knew that I couldn't afford to drive like a complete asshole on the street.

Had my parents given me an S2000, without me understanding how much hard work goes into being able to afford a nice car, I probably would have wrapped it around a pole.

It's tragic to see these types of accidents, but they're preventable.

here is any other one but a famous kid Nick Hogan Hulk Hogans son crashed his supra this weeked into a palm tree at a high rate of speed
