2013~2016: Spare fob lost in CX-5

Problem: I believe my spare fob is lost somewhere in car. When I lock my CX5, I get 10 second beeping and message that my fob battery is weak. I then unlock Mazda and take main fob about 40 ft away and leave it there. I can then return to my still unlocked car and start the engine with my main fob far away. Is it possible that the car can be started from so far away. Or, as I believe, the fob is still somewhere in the car perhaps in the seat tracks. Please help if you can! I don’t want my car stolen. Thanx in advance!

There's lots of places for something as small as a FOB to get lost. You know it's in the car so just start searching. If you're able to start the car then the FOB is probably somewhere in the front.
You should not be able to start from 40 ft away. Range is more like 4 feet (if that).

Could you use the manual key key to lock the car so at least it is locked up? Until you find the key in the car.

But I don't know it's in the car. That was my question. If there is any other alternative, then I won't break my 79 yr old neck & back looking for it. Is there any other possibility than it is not in my car?

If. You. Have. A younger neighbor. Please ask him nicely to search your car. With a telescopic.Magnet.

You don't know that it's in the car, right? It's nowhere else though, right? Not in the garage or somewhere near the car?

It sure sounds like it's in the car from your description and if it's possible that it is, it is.

Get you a nice bright flashlight and start looking.

You should not be able to start the car with the fob outside the car, regardless of distance. So yes it definitely sounds like the other fob is in your car.

the beeping when you lock the car would also indicate the keyfob is in the car.

More than that, typically the keyfob also need to be in the front row. Performance there may vary and it may still work from further back, but if you have to narrow your search i would start with front row, then move on to back row and then trunk.

Some suggestions on where to search:

Check in between the seat and the center console. The space is tight and it might have lodged in between instead of falling to the floor.

Check the cut outs in the carpet underneath the seats used to route cables and wires up to the seat.

If you have any clothes in your car, check the pockets. I saw a car detailing video where the owner of the car had the same problem. The remote was lost somewhere in the car and he couldn’t find it. As the detailer was taking things out of the car to clean the interior, he found the remote in the pocket of a pair of jeans that was in the backseat.

Car will not start even putting the fob up next to the driver side door on the outside. 99.9% it's in the car. Look up on top of the dash. Check all the cubby holes. If you can't bend down get somebody to help you with a bright flashlight. The CX-5 is great for stealing things and not giving them up easily.

From what I read, the detection is based on triangulation of three sensors.
1 in center console. 2 in the front doors.
To start the engine, the fob has to be within reasonable distances to the three.
i.e. fob cannot be outside the doors.
In short, your fob remains inside the cabin ....
Could be in the backseat also. The fob can still start the engine if located in the backseat.
Yes. I tried it.

This.

I went on Amazon and bought a pair of those long round foam things that you can tuck in between the seat and centre console. They are cheap, and very effective. I don't worry anymore about dropping things down that small crack between the seats and console. I highly recommend them.

Thinking about how many times I've gotten out of the car, opened the rear door, and reached under the seat for a key or phone that I dropped down there...that's where my money is.

I hear ya. I'll bet it's down between the drivers seat and the center console.
I put some dummy keys on a keyring with the FOB just to give it some bulk.

I use a mostly used roll of paper towels. I get them from the kitchen when they are about 4" around and stuff them between the seat and console and on the sides. Handy if somebody spills something as there's a roll of paper towels close by.

Great idea.

Just to prove the fob is not in the torn lining of your coat, may I suggest, you take off all your clothes and leave them in the house and then test the car in your birthday suite. That will prove if the fob is hidding in your coat lining or pockets. What do you think? Let me know. Be creative. 😄

I agree it appears to be in the car. If you like, you can wrap the other fob in aluminum foil, or put it into a metal can with a tight fitting metal lid, or both. That will ensure no radio signal can reach it.

After that, I agree that the fob is most likely inside and in the front seat areas. You need someone who can and will go over every square inch of the interior, with a "failure is not an option" attitude.

That said, this same thing happened to a friend of mine with an Honda Accord. He did not find the fob. A year and a half later its battery died, and the ordeal was ended.

I am not sure why would someone lose/ misplace the key in the engine compartment, but here I am, suggesting another search area. Under the hood, under the wiper blades, maybe under the engine, battery compartment, fuse box, relay box etc!
