Problem:
I thought the sound coming from the left side of my engine bay was an axle.

Bigger Problem:
It wasn't

Worst problem:
It was the differential (or some other tranny component) and the car no longer moves under it's own power.

Solution:
Is anyone available this weekend that can help me swap the transmission? I think I found a replacement one in Griffin. I don't really have a lot (any) money to pay anyone, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for help, being that if I can't get it fixed I'll be paying out of the @$$ for a rental car for a week or two.

Anyone up for it? Me love you long time...

What makes you think it still isn't the axle? A broken axle on a car with an open diff will also permanantly park the car. There's a chance the CV could be broken, yet no damage done to the boot. As a number of S2000 owners.

That would be amazing. I really hope thats the case...Any way to know for sure?

Muff and I had it up on stands last night, turning one wheel, it would go about 300 degrees and then stop. as of right now, it's sitting at covenant christian academy dead. I walked to the library and am trying to figure this out before I have to walk to work...

This blows big time lol.

I thought most cars did, isn't that how it transmits power to the wheels / allows it to turn? It's an open diff.

It was engaging perfectly, was perfectly smooth, no sounds except under deceleration.

So does anyone else have any ideas pertaining to my issue? I kinda need to know so I can either panic or just go buy another axle lol.

2886, what was your car doing when your diff decided to die?

Wasn't my diff actually - I was told it was the input shaft bearing that gave out. If you have a local mechanic that you trust - see if they can come out to see your car. Normally I'd suggest letting them drive it around the block but your car is perma-parked apparently.

If it were just a broken axle, would you see any signs of that with the car in neutral and trying to push it let's say ?

i would try the axle first cause i haven't really heard of people breaking the regular old open dif, just the msp limited

If it is his axle could he pull it and be able to tell if that is the problem even without the broken boot? would one portion of teh axle spin seperately? He'd have to pull it anyways to take the tranny off so he might as well test that first.

We checked the axle a little less than a week ago and they looked fine all the boots were perfectly intact. Michael have you looked under the car to see if there is any signs of damage? I am pretty sure its something internal to the trans. Where exactly is the car at?

Covenant Christian academy parking lot. Prolly gonna get it to my house after work tonight.

The only reason I think its a CV joint, is that Chris' (Prodigy) was doing the exact same thing before he replaced his axles. The car goes into gear perfectly, and when it was moving, shifted perfectly.

Buying another trans isn't an issue, FINDING one is. You later 3rd gen guys have it easy. Go to PaP and get a probe trans. I think the G15 fits my car, with the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate that goes on the F25
