hey whats up peeps this is my first post/intro so here it is my name is dario i have a 02 canary p5 recently purchased and ive had trouble from the get the car started up ok at first then the mechanic said i needed a new alternator..fine new alt. put in and it wouldnt even turn over it just made a clicking noise, then dude tells me i needed a new starter..fine new starter put in and it still did the same thing i took advice from a fellow p5 owner and cleaned the corrosion off the battery terminals and cables and then the starter worked as it was supposed to so mind you im already in 300 bucks on the new alt. and starter and it probably wasnt even those things..now im back to where it started it just wont start now he tells me i need a new ecu/ecm
and i dont wanna go get one only to put it in and nothing happen can anyone please help i wanna drive this thing soo badd already lol sorry for the long post but if you have read this much then thanks alot i appreciate it!..ps:all fuses have been checked

to me it seems like its just the battery..if u tried starting it and its clicking that means ur starter is still working but its not turning over cause theres not enough juice in the batt..

try jump starting it then go from there..

You don't need a new ECU...not sure why mechanics ever recommend that. I agree with replacing the battery before doing anything else.

Yea dude idunno i tried using another newer battery and still smh ive had someone else say that it might be the ignition?

Get new connectors to your battery the stock ones suck. Also you may be haveing the same issue I am wiggle your alarm box under the drivers dash and see if it will start if mine isn't sitting right my car won't start either. If that doesn't work I would say bad wires or ignition switch def not the ecu.mechanics usually say its the ecu because they can make a lot of money off of it
And what does smh mean?

check all the wires from the battery, replace the battery if needed. check all fuses. and not to forget fire that mechanic, get your money back from him for bad diagnostics and remember to put a bad review on yelp about the shop you went to so we can all avoid him.

Using another battery was it a known good battery with proper cca for the vehicle and good battery connections though? Also, go back to this twat of a mechanic and get your damn money back. That's bulls*** to sell you things you don't even need, don't pay for that s***. How are they going to tell you that your alternator is bad and that's why your car won't START? It doesn't do s*** to start your car it just keeps it going and keeps the battery charged. Good battery you can start it with no alternator.

^AGREED dude that "mechanic" just ***** you. ECU? he's just trying to get money from you now. my wifes p5 did the same s***, i tightened all the connections, it stopped, then happened again. replaced the battery and its worked fine so far.

don't forget, if you have a stock alarm system and you disconnect the battery, you'll need to lock and unlock the car with the remote to reactivate the alarm system and allow you to start the car...if thats not an issue you need to have your battery tested (don't rely on someone elses used battery)...you could also have a bad ground wire/lose connection....

hey guys whats up thanks alot for all the replies keep em comin i feel like im closer to gettin her on...i was thinkin about replacing the coil packs? Im getting a new battery tomorrow..when the guy hooked up the diagnostic it was giving him all kinds of diff codes and he swears its the damn ecu is here any way i can test it to see if its still good?

i never heard of an ECU having problems. does it turn over at all? coil packs usually just make it misfire, but it dont hurt to replace them, they are only like $30. you will need to do it eventually along with the wires.

yup, find someone with a p5 and swap them (ecu) out...take you about 15 mins, two people removing and swapping...and make sure it's a "canary" yellow p5! ;)

...not that i know of! Another thing somebody told me if you disconnect your battery negative first it will fry your ecu!..is this true?

And its vibrant yellow if im correct....not canary....aint no bird here cept for thr one i throw to bad drivers

What exactly is happening when you try to crank it? Clicking, cranking freely, nothing at all??

Coils will not cause it to not start unless they are completely fried which I have never seen in the 4 I have been through and all the issues people have had with them on here for the past 8yrs.
Lift up the carpet on the drivers side floorboard to look for rust other than that I would say 100% it is not the ecu!

Put a meter on the battery while your cranking and see what voltage you get??

I also agree with looking into the alarm system...
