my bad. i got ran into 
there's a non-sunroof LX for sale near me. yet again, i'm wishing i never sold my '90 SE. what a great car.
225/45/13 Hoosiers on 13x9 rims should work just fine, and their uber-shortness will help. the DX/SE came stock w/ 13s, and i really don't think there's any need to fit bigger brakes.
btw, AWR offers 1st gen strut tubes w/ shortened Bilsteins, or single-or double-adustable Koni inserts. rock.

the lx front rotors are bigger though. i cant remember if the 13s still clear them
you might have to swap in the rear drums too...LXs came w/ 4-wheel discs; the other came w/ rear drums.
i know. i'm assuming the car is an SE/DX w/ an LX drivetrain swapped in, which is the way i'd go. from what i've read, that swap is pretty straightforward.

id use the bigger brakes, they are amazing
I'm probably going to end up buying the blue one in the pictures that I posted If Robert can't find me a full LX with no sunroof and manual tranny. I can't find any other local ones. The blue was an auto so I'll have to source a tranny for it since it's, but I'll be stripping the entire car down anyway so converting it back to a manual won't be a big deal.

im going to go test drive this today. i cannot tell if it has a moonroof or not, but it looks to be in your price range, and looks mint as hell. and at 140k, its barely broken in

Looks like a moonroof in the picture to me but I could be wrong.
Also with update/backdate brakes do not have to be swapped as a whole system IIRC so you might be able to just swap in the brake parts that you want and not have to swap in parts you dont.
Now you just need to make your brake rotors look like this.

Actually I'm getting ready to do that on a slightly lesser scale to my rotors. You stand to lose a few pounds of rotational mas per wheel like that. That picture is a little excessive since I still use mine for street duty, but the 1st Gen I'm building might get that kind of treatment.

what about dropping the better engine into the better chassis...a BP into a 3rd gen?
this is just spitballing; i have NO idea about mounting points or anything. i highly doubt it could be done legally, but if it could, that's the way to go.
ANYTHING can be done with enough time and money. A better choice would be an FE3.
did the FE3 ever come in a protege in the US? if not, it's not Street Prepared legal.
i'm not considering cost (as hypothetical stuff is always free); merely the ability to do it w/in the rules.
edit: the specific rule that seems to govern any update/backdate swap is 15.1.C, which states in relevant part:
"The updated/backdated part or the part to which it is to be attached may not be altered, modified, machined or otherwise changed to facilitate the updating/backdating allowance."
which would seme to require a straight drop-in swap only. however, 15.10.I states that:
"Engine mounts may be replaced, but must attach in the factory location(s) without additional modification or changes."
it sounds like as long as the mounts attach to the engine and frame in the OE locations, you're OK.
i'm specifically wondering about the difference in the mounting points.
