So why don't they advertise the thing!?

The problem usually is though, US Mazda will drop the car after a few year citing lackluster sales. They will not advertise it and not feel justified to equip it with options like you mention due to the lack of sales also.

It's weird.

Could you imagine that 143HP TD mated to a 6-speed!? Oh my...I feel tingly...

Matt, have you visited www.fordexcursions.com or www.ford-trucks.com ? I go by the same username at both places. :)

I wished Mazda advertised the 5 here in the Dallas market, because I found out about the 5 online.

Matt

It was supposed to be online ads and surfers turnament that got the buzz going. I think more people are getting it from word of mouth and from car mag test. Car and Driver mag had info on the online and surfers turnament re: this car. Automobile mag has a long term test of the 5 in their long term fleet.

While these aren't advertisements, pretty much the majority, if not all the professional car reviews have given the 5 a thumbs up. Doesn't do much, but doesn't hurt, either.

we saw it originally saw the 5 on Motorweek on the local PBS station. I knew once I saw it, it was going to be in the driveway sooner or later.

You go on certain sites they have online ad for the 5 as quoted on my original reply. I think it's quicksilver's home page, make sure it's the surfware not the software co. That's where i saw it 1st then I went to the Mazdausa site. The mag articles were about 4-6 months later.

"I wanted the safest vehicle for MY family..."
Sorry to digress again, but someone needs to point out that SUVs are not that safe, both for others on the road and for those in the SUVs.

"Child injuries from rollover accidents were more common in SUVs and outweighed the safety benefits of larger, heavier vehicle frames, according to an analysis of insurance claims collected between March 2000 and December 2003 from State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co."
http://www.usinsurancezone.com/news/suv-safety-study.html

Don't think that your driving skills will prevent a roll over. SUVs are more likely to roll over even when the other driver causes the accident.

Good grief people!!! Where the hell do you all come from!? Leave me be! Are we talking about cornering ability!? NO! Rollover prevention?! NO! (enguard) Someone doesn't need to point it out to me...if I wanted something pointed out to me, I'd ASK! Kinda like I did with this advertising thread.

I'll drive what I effin' want! I don't need your effin' statistics! I wanted to talk about advertising, not have a bunch whiners b**** about my other truck.

No, not really. It was a valid point and a good example. :) What I wish is that a bunch of self-righteous buttholes didn't have internet access.

I'm sorry if I offended you. I already apologized for digressing, and I do so again. I made no statement as to what anyone should or should not drive. I did not attack anyone nor call anyone a self-righteous butthole.

Many more people read these threads than post. So when the statement was made that SUVs are the safest vehicle for a family I posted a reply that disagreed with this statement and I attempted to do so with facts not hearsay.

Other than my 5, I drive a 1991 3/4ton 4x4 GMC Pickup with a tow package... basically a big arse SUV with an open back. The mileage sucks. It stops like a freightliner and corners like a house with wheels. It has no airbags, no shoulder harness for my 6-year-old daughter in the center seat. No antilock brakes...... Safety was one of the reasons for buying a 5.

Mosta,
No offense but you are the one that stated..
....it is one of the safest, fuel efficent (using passenger & cargo formula) on the market.

All we're doing it pointing out a difference of opinion based on collected data.

Take it for what it's worth but before you start making claims make sure you have data to support it. Also be willing to have others disagree with your statements. I am not attacking you personally and I mean no harm or disrespect. However, if you can't handle people disagreeing with you, maybe you should unplug your self from the internet, specifically discussion forums.

Sincerely,
-Mike

You cannot have opinions and facts at the same time. :)

Listen, I'm not all up in arms and sorry if I offended anybody with the butthole comment. I wrote that prior to my morning coffee.

Let's break down what I said. "It is ONE of the safest...blah...blah...blah." I made no claim that it THE safest. But compared to a small SUV it will always win the collision "war". When the most popular vehicle (it seems) is a 3/4ton, 4x4, crew cab short bed truck I don't want to take chances. Problem is, nobody bitches about those trucks...only if it has a permanant cap with a third seat in it does the public cry out!

You response was how one took the lives of your family members (of which I am deeply sorry) however, it wasn't the Excursion's fault. It was driver's fault. Put blame where it lies. Just like the old saying, "guns don't kill people, people kill people".

I gotta go now...but I would like to continue this conversation and promise to keep it civil.

I agree with you, in fact I stated....

It's not the cars (SUV) that are the problem, it that people do not know how to drive them.

Again, my apologies. I did not mean to offend (or hijack the thread).

BTW, dispite Mazda's lack of advertising, I'm starting to see a few more 5s on the road. Here is what Car & Driver had to say about Mazda's marketing plan (I assume for the US) click here.

Mike...great link. :) That's gonna be the problem with Mazda and 5 in the US. Promoting it only to one market. That's what Chrysler did with the PT Cruiser and the opposite market bought it. They should market its strengths and let the sales come those who apprectiate its merits.

I'm certainly not the market they are advertising for! Are any of us?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I gotta let the hijack that I perpetrated rest. We'll all agree to disagree...I hope. (cool)
I do need to say that all those articles and links and studies NEVER included the Excursion as it is not tested by anyone for much of anything....not the EPA...not the IIHS...not the NHTSA...etc. So in fairness, I cannot make direct comparisons to crash worthyness and occupant safety. I can only attest to my own wreck and the fact that size does matter in most vehicluar crash situations.
But...I did not buy the Excursion with only safety in mind. I bought it for its utility, power, cargo & passenger room & towing prowess.
However, in the situation below, which vehicle would you rather be in at the moment of a 50mph impact.
Oh and how do y'all like the tint on my 5? :)
I'm certainaly not in that demographic. However I think we've ruled out the Mazda5 :( as it just won't be big enough for a family of 5 plus a 60lb dog and all the stuff that goes with. It would be our primary family vehicle. Who knows, maybe when the CR-V dies, I'l pick up a 5 (however I plan on getting at least 200,000 miles out of the CR-V).
monsta, is that mirrored tint? I've never been a fan of mirrored tint but it really looks good on the pearlize white, much better that I wound have thought.
Where in the big island are you? It's been 10 years since my wife and I were out on Hawaii but have very found memories of our honeymoon. We here suposed to go back for our 10 year anniversary but with kids, work, time, etc. we just couldn't pull it off.
Well, they were off target. While Mazda was going to do something with Quiksilver, has anyone seen he results? Nope? Well, not sure about the youth or active lifestyle but what Mazda ended up doing is targeting moms. My wife was pregnant before we got the 5 and it was in every Mom or Parenting magazine at her OBGYN office. So, they obviously targeted women, moms, families.
Great picture!
As for advertising, I haven't heard much of it here in Utah. But I don't watch much TV, so if the ads are there I'm probably missing them.
As for the tint on your 5, garans babarans its da kine (I'm FOB howlee yah). IMHO the mirrored type of tint looks good with a few colors, like the 5s two silvers. I need a picture in the sun that show my tint.
As for what I'd rather be in during a 50 mph head on impact, of course I'd take the behemoth. But that doesn't necessarily make it safer to drive. I think I'd be less likely to roll while trying to avoid the impact in the one on the left. I also think I'd be more likely to avoid the accident in the 1st place in the one on the left. By the way, I sometimes drive one on the ones on the right for work. It's an attempted replacement for the 14 and 18 passenger vans that we can no longer drive because they have a tendency to roll over. I think the vans were even bigger than the Excursion but deemed not as safe.
"Problem is, nobody bitches about those trucks...." If trucks aren't being used as trucks most of the time then they are the same as any big SUV that isn't being used as a truck. This is one of the reasons I got a 5 and have only put a few thousand miles on my truck since. Speaking of behemoths, we got some really big ones around here... Now which would you rather be in during a collision? (dunno)
Actually, that's not Whitewater Pearl, that's Greensilver :)
But I agree, tint looks good
