So the forums got combined, eh?

Alright. I guess it makes sense given how similar the two generations are.

So, now we gotta rub elbows with the "old school" Mazda5-files?? Would we even speak the same language?? This is weird. I'm calling a (strike)

I was just going to say... Welcome to the new Mazda 5 section!

As i was noticing, that a lot of people were wanting this. It is a good change... i hope. Most of us know that the cars are basically just cosmetically different, engine changes aside.

I honestly like the previous gen Mazda5 body style better than the 2012+. But I was shopping for a new one so that kind of narrowed it down. Not a fan of this Nagare stuff, if you want to make a car look like it's surrounded by water, why don't you just sink it in a river?? Cars are surrounded by air, which we can't see. I don't mind some subtle shaping and curves here and there but you have to be careful not to go apeshit.

we're looking for another car. i suggested the prev gen mazda5... wife thought it would be too weird having both... meh..

Well, the first gen guys may have a barely smaller engine, but hey, at least we don't have the hideous joker smile, ridiculously wavy lines, and terribly sagging taillights.

I never understood the smile on the bumper either, must've been a long night and too many bottles of Sake for the exterior design team at Hiroshima. The wavy lines remind me of a Lay's Wavy potato chip. The taillights aren't too bad, I do like the vertical setup better, and makes the car look taller/bigger that way.

P.S.: Now that we have combined forces... when are the previous generation Mazda5 guys going to invite us to bingo night?? (rlaugh)

The more I see the new gen the more its growing on me. Joker smile works better on the 5 then it does on the 3. Tail lights aren't too bad but the rear does remind me of Frankenteins face and head. The nagare lines have to go though. I still prefer my old school original 2006 better.

Yeah, it is like a ugly dog that everyday you see it, you come to tolerate it's ugliness more and more. Over time it's ugliness becomes less offensive to look at. That is how it is with the 2012. I know several people who only know of the 5 because I own one and tell me how they see the 2012's out on the street and prefer the 2010's and earlier. I got to at least give Mazda credit for being unique in their design approach. Not withstanding the fact it was misguided with the joker smile or the nagare design, but you definitely don't mistake a Mazda for anything else on the road. No one can accuse them of ripping off other car makers designs like Ford has done with the Fusion looking like a Jaguar or like Kia Optimum copying elements of Audi. Their design in the last several years has differently been distinctively Japanese in design: Japanese anime that is. That is why I am glad they toned down the joker smile on my 2012 3 to were it is bearable. That is also why the Kodo design language is a breath of fresh air. Weird thing is that the side profiles of the 2012 5 (minus the nagare) and 3 looks fine, but the front and back are a different story.

I had to do a double-take to be sure I wasn't missing something with the new combined forum! I certainly like the 1st gen style better, and from the side the 1st gens look alot smaller to be due to the tail lights. I haven't driven a 1st gen but I do like the powertrain of the 2.5 MZR with the 6MT. I need my wife to hurry up and wear out her tires so we can pick out a more aggressive looking wheelset.

Oh...and hi everyone.

i like the 08-10 5 look the best... only slightly biased. i could have handled the new 5 if they had kept the tail lights where they were. now it looks like a converted sedan... meh.

but i agree with the new styling. it is polarizing, but you know a mazda when you see it! the smile has grown on me.

i agree with you rockin. i like the vertical taillights better. i wish the new 5 looked at least like the nissan lafesta highwaystar

Yeah, the front on the Nissan looks very similar to the first gen 5 and I like that a lot, also, they have just the right amount of curves in the door. Funny how when, you remove the joker smile from the front fascia and the waves from the doors, it makes the new generation way more appealing. Also, Ironic how Nissan of all companies makes the new 5 look better, because they have been putting out some ugly looking cars for quite a few years now. Of course the new Altima doesn't look to bad, but it isn't by any means a 2014 6 either.
