So has anybody ordered the TriPoint kit?

I'm just curious because I remember a bunch of people saying "ME! ME! ME!" back in the day. Now that its out, I haven't heard anybody say they are ordering it. I'd hate to see TriPoint get screwed after the claims of people wanting the kit. Much worse, I'd hate to see our false claims give us one less company making things for our cars.

If not, what is the problem? Price? Aerodyne turbo?

Chris

As happy as I am to see them release the kit, I think the price may be a bit much for most of us. For those of you who haven't had the chance to see the kit, here's the link Tripoint Engineering Turbo Kit. I think the price for the kit is fine for the gains you get. What i'd personally liike to know is if the Aerodyne turbo is a VATN unit or regular ball bearing turbo. I should just call them and ask, but I'm too lazy. If it is the VATN unit, I consider that a steal as far as the pricing goes. I do wish they'd clear up they're torque numbers though, those can't be correct. I think it because of the Dyno they used. I think everyone should take a look at this kit and actually consider it. With a clutch/flywheel upgrade, you will have a lot of fun.

As for Aerodyne reliability - From what I've gathered on my Google Groups searches, the older units (mid 90s) were the problematic ones. They had bearing problems etc. But now they're supposedly "fixed". It looks like Corky Bell used them in some of his late 90s Turbo Projects as well. Of course I don't know all of the details (as to what type he used etc). Anybody with more knowledge should step in here ;).

"Max HP was at 5200 RPM and Max torque was at 4000 RPM"

Wow, max HP is WAY too low...should be like 5800-6000RPM...maybe the turbo is too small?

Hey...i just called them and asked them...they said that THOSE numbers are what was reported from their dyno, but that their dyno may be "different" than others. I think I'm right about them having a small turbo...it allegedly has a 2" outlet on the turbo. Also, the turbo is "self contained" and does not need to be hooked up to an oil line, etc. He did not know whether it was a VATN unit or what a VATN unit was.

I did not talk to Mark...it was just one of his workers. I asked if we could buy the kit w/o the turbo...but he said he didn't know...a bigger turbo may be better...but then again, it may need bigger than a 2" outlet.

I want a turbo!

I do! I do! I do!

Two things holding me back.

$$$PRICE$$$

WARRANTY. I only have 1650 miles on my MP5. I would at least like to get a few oil changes out of the deal!

I think thats the best price we are going to get for a turbo...They cant make much money on it because of such a small limited cars made. Its either this or your custom turbo. WTF are we going to do I need my car to gain some power 200 hp would be so sweet...grrrrr $$$$$ doesnt seem to be worth it.

I would buy it rightnow, but 1 thing holds me back. I have a darn auto!! After 10 years driving stick I got tired so I made the mistake of buying an auto MP. Does anyone know how much power the auto tranny can take? Also, what's Tripoint phone number.
Does anyone know who makes torque converters for our cars?

Level Ten make a converter for the Protege I believe. Personally I would wait BEGI (Bell Engineering) is releaseing a kit next month that will eb far superior to the Tripoint kit they also produce teh flyin miata kits so that will give you some idea of quality. Price shoudl be around 3500-3800 intercooled with a fuel managment system.

I might be wrong, but I am assuming our Proteges have the same auto tranny as the Japanese Sport 20 wagon that makes 170 HP. If that is the case, my tranny should at least take that much power, right?

The tranny can handle it...

I want the kit, but $3800 sound a lil steep. I am willing to pay a max of $3300, but not a penny more! My budget is $4000 for the kit, labor and tunning, not a penny more. I am sure the price will come down as demands goes down, simply economics....

The tripoint kit could be made better with a few small tweaks...
for starters, just use bigger injectors instead of 2 extra ones...

LoL:D :D
Goodluck!!!!!!
A turbo is not like a airfilter kit or something. You are gonna run into snags along the way, and it has to be tuned, and you need an exhaust, and you need boost, egt, airfuel gauges, and you need to change fluids, and you should get header wrap for the downpipe, and you...........on and on and on. A turbo system is a big deal. And for 3800 dollars that is a steal. But dont expect to stop there, you are going to have to lay down some serious cheese on a turbo kit. Expect to pay 5 grand for a full system installed and tuned with all necessary components to safley integrate a turbo into your ride.
Goodluck on your quest but prepare to open up that wallet:p

Guy's I talked to mark through e-mail and I may be putting a deposit on the kit some time next week, but there were two questions he didn't answer and one I forgot to ask. One is does anybody know if I can continue to use my MHP intake or if I need to get an Injen, 2nd I noticed in the pics that none of the intercooler piping is polished, thats kinda bunk, even though I can get it polished for about a hundred bucks you'd think they'd give you the option, does anybody know if maybe it does come polished and thats just a pic??? And my last question I forgot to ask is if I will be needing a new manifold, if so do you think thats supplied in the kit. From what I understand the kit includes pretty much everything I need to get me on the road turbocharged, but is there something I'm missing? anyway I should have it sometime in July, I'll get back to guy's by then.
