So about these control arms...

Seeing as how my clunking is coming back (had swaybar replaced in January, started clunking a few weeks ago), I think its time to talk to the dealer again. I'm going to mention the control arms being replaced and probably print out JcsMP3's thread. I'm worried about how they will replace these... Should I make sure they remove the rims and/or not use a cutting torch? I've heard if they do that you weaken the sway bar. Can the controls be taken off by normal means (ie taking off the sway bar assembly completely)? Thanks!

My clunking / sqeaking problems got fixed by replacing the links, so your worries may not be applicable?!

I removed my control arms by myself after I curbed my car really hard back on November of 01'. I had bent the lower control arm bar to hell, so I had to fix it. I took me about an hour and a half with out power tools. I assure you that it is not the lower control arm making the noise. For some reason I don't think the dealer will swap those out for you without an extremely valid reason to do so. At least I know my dealer wouldn't, but you'll have better luck than I did.

mngai,
Are the links something different than the control arms?

APEXi,
Out of curiousity, what makes you so sure its not the control arms? Back when I had my car in for the clunk in January, they tried replacing the bushings. They took it for a spin and no go, same noise. Then they told me they took the swaybar off completely and drove around and it was fine. So they replaced the swaybar (and left the damn invoice sticker on the thing), and all was good until a few days ago. What else is there on these magical bars that can go wrong? So far I know of the bar itself, the bushings, and the control arms. Thanks man.

Chris

Of course I'm not 100% sure, more like 98% sure that it's not the control arms. If you look at how they function, then you'll start to see what I'm talking about. I guess since I'm not a suspension genius, it's a little difficult to explain. Once I had mine out of my car I got a really good look at it. I could be wrong, but if you're going to replace them and you have to pay for it, I wouldn't suggest doing it. But, if the dealer is going to do it under warranty, go for it. I think AWR makes a new front control arm bar.
