Snow Tires?

:
Mazda 3 & CX5
Any opinions whether or not I will need snow tires
on my M5 and my M3? Both cars come equipped with
Toyo Proxes AO5's. I know it is still summer but I am
just trying to budget for 8 new tires and rims if I need to.

Cheers,
Robin

Snow Tires - A Must

The stock tires on the Mazda5 are crappy on dry pavement...I wouldn't try them on snow covered pavement.....But it is very much dependent on the type of driving you do.

I got myself a set of 17" Yohohama snow tires for my '5' and have no regrets. Living east of Toronto you'll probably be better off with snow tires for sure.

you live in Canada!!!! It snows! get snowies. They make a world of difference. May I suggest the hankook W404 snow tires. They are cheap and amazingly good in snow. especially deep snow. I have them on every car in the driveway.

To me Winter tires are a must for the 5. Low profile tires on aluminum wheels are not a great winter combination. I'm fitting Pirelli Winter Carving 205/55R16's on steelies. Ideally I'd want 195's but they're not easy to find in 195/60R16 in the tires I like.

i have myself a MSP with stock 17's on them and during the winter im riding on 195/65R15's Michelin Artic Alpines in the front and 2 BF Goodrich Tourings in the back...I s*** you not my car at times is better then my girls AWD Talon...snow tires to me is like a life line & a must have

So where does one buy steel wheels to fit the 5? Or do you keep the stock wheels and swap tires back and forth? I would rather buy steel wheels I think.

www.tires.com has steelies for pretty cheap if not www.tirerack.com i know i got mine from working on a customers car who didnt want them b/c they claimed they were "bent"...so he asked if i can throw them out for him...needless to say i "un-bent" them and they go on my car when snow hits

I am in the GTA area and highly recommend snow tires. I do have the stock size of the Pirelli winter carving and they are pretty good. Another one that I would consider would be the Hankook Icebear W300 (heard good things about this one). Either way you can't go wrong but the Perilli is more money.

Cheers

WI is pretty good w/plowing, it's flat, so all seasons are ok. The only car I've ever had to put snows on was my '00 Passat, but that was lowered so it's more stiff and threw off the balance of the car for slippery traction. When I lived in the East Coast, Snows were a must.

Living in Montreal, will need snow tires and rims. Anybody know where's the best place in Montreal for rims and tires?

Phone your mazda stealership right away and buy some steelies, if you wait until snow flies they will be sold out. I bought mine in Calgary from the dealer for $55/rim (15").

As for tires, my experience with Nokian rsi's is very good (I currently run them on my msp in the winter) and also the Toyo Garret HT's are very good.

Agree but since they are in the US, custom and shipping charges will quickly add up.

I didn't realize the charge custom charges to Canada on mail order. OK, how bout cking Discount Tire, they show them sponsoring Canadian car shows, I'm sure they can direct you the the proper store/installer. Ok, ok, how bout some Canadian friends here direct this fine person to the good place to get this done.

If you have a Kal Tire, get the 16" Core Racing multi spoke alloys. Can't remember the model. I got a set, and they were about $100 each. Dirt cheap for alloys and look better than steelies.
Nothing but good things to say about Nokian RSI's, got them from there too.

You definately need winters. It will keep you sane and stressfree on the icy roads.

You could also try Tiretrends.com (they're in BC) or TireCraft.com (They are in Toronto), wheels-direct.com (toronto), tiredepot.com (toronto). All of these are Canadian.

Customs fees in Canada are truly disgusting. ever since they framed it out to private brokers! I've more than once ordered something (unavailable in Canada) only to have the customs brokerage and taxes come out to more than I paid for the product in the first place!

Looks to me like they are western Canada based. Just had a look at their web site and they don't have any locations in southern Ontario?? Odd 1/4 of Canada's population lives in Southern Ontario
