Snapped an axle.

i wanted to upgrade to mazdaspeed axles when i was getting my lsd, it was about 1000$ just for the axles.

I guess we cant use slick with stock axles......

I was staged and ready to go when the axle snapped, light was turning green, I let the clutch go, and BAM! The car didn't even move an inch, hell, I was still staged after it broke. I usually launch at 3000 to 3500, and in case your wondering, I use BF Goodrich drag radials.

The axle is pretty short, it was sticking straight out from the tranny, so all it did when it snapped was just spin in mid air, nothing for it to hit.

I say if you don't upgrade to aftermarket, get the Mazdaspeed axles.

Definitly a drop of the clutch, I was racing at the time.

Thats usually the cause of most axles snapping. You are unleashing full engine torque onto the axles and if the tires don't break loose something else usually goes.

Slip the hell out of the clutch and you'll keep your axles longer.

Uhh, no, this car wasn't built for babying it down a track, I will find stronger axles somewhere.

If not, then it seems like I can get 10 runs out of the axles, I will just take extra's to change at the track when they break.

BTW, just for "search" purposes.

97 Probe axles are the right length, but have 2 too many splines, need 26, it had 28

00 Escort has the right amount of splines, but is 1/2 inch too short, 24 1/2 inches, need at least 25 inches.

I am trying to locate 99 Cougar axle to see what it looks like, have not found one yet. If it is the right one, ABS was standard on the 5 speed, so I will have to deal with that funky toothed wheel, but shouldn't be a problem.

Others I am looking for is the Contour and ZX2, and also looked for Kia Sportage, but it wasnt available. It is probally the exact match, and thats why its not available since the Proteges arn't.

Well, I don't know if the stock axles come shot-peened, but you should get it done. It will eliminate some possible shear points.

I was looking at those pics and wondered why in the heck did they taper the axles to a skinnier diameter? Just to save a little weight?! Can they really be saving money by doing that?!

Yep, I was wondering the same thing. Thats why I really was hoping the Probe would fit. It was one diameter straight accross, and a bit thicker.

dont the probe hubs bolt up?
they should the part numbers on the brakes seem to be the same. Maybe you can just swap the knuckles

You just had NO LUCK at all. Because my axles are still there and mi friends too and hes doing 13.2-13.5 on his P5 @ 11psi with slicks and bronze clutch.
