Smart Path to being boosted

I've been wondering, as a newb, what the best path may be to becoming a boosted car.

In my eyes, I would rather spend my money first on a new clutch, LSD, forged internals, 3" exhaust, management, etc.

I know this is frowned upon in many ways, but just wanted to get some insider views as to how this could be done. I obviously don't care about loosing HP in the process before being boosted, I just want to address all the nitty gritty's that people tend to miss when jumping in and spending all their money on a kit. I would much rather be prepared and boosting hard in 2 years.

Are there risks associated to say, purchasing a built wagner block at a lower compression, running NA ?

Sorry for the newb questions, be easy on me

Thanks

you'll be fine with those parts on a n/a it will be a little slower till you add some boost

actually thats being smart, you want to make sure you have the supporting mods before you go boosting. if you get the mods you have listed and then get the turbo kit, you'll save yourself alot of trouble later on down the line, i agree with you, beef up the motor and clutch then slap on one fat ass turbo and boost your ass off. i say shoot for at least 18psi. i'm currently at 15psi and i'm looking to get a bigger turbo so i can crank the boost. i just drove a freind of mines car, he just got it back out of the shop and he is boosting 21psi in his talon...way fun..but your on the right track, keep going and keep us posted.

It's just that with my insurance being about 6-7k per year, I start to save money, and then something comes up...I either want it or need it.

I figure this way, I can do the little s**** here and there, and be ready for it later.

That said, I'm still hooked on the supercharger idea, and want to watch how it pans out... :D

By the time I get the little things finished, my record will have cleared and insurance will be back to a normal rate :D

i'm the wagner prototype kit and we initially started at 2 psi with an fmu and i did about 2 track days testing at that boost...then we went up to 4psi with the fmu and i did 2 more track days of testing...after that i upgraded to the MPI unit with extra injectors (not much else was available until Andy helped AEM develop its EMS unit for these cars) and went to 7psi

very quickly the stock brakes became inadequate...at 4psi i was ok with race pads and cd rotors up front and medium duty pads and slotted rears (of course running ate superblue brake fluid)...at 7psi where i'm on average running faster laps than stock camaros and mustangs but my brakes could not stop the car whatsoever (often have to bleed the brakes after each 20-30 minute session)...i upgraded to the www.e-racer.com $800 wilwood 4 piston kit and added in some performance friction race pads and that car stops like nobody's business (had fun with a 360 modena and murcielago last wednesday running the chute and carousel - couldn't shake me until we got to the straight - i also knew the line better than they did so that put me at an advantage)

an lsd will do wonders as i'm past due for one but waiting for prices for used trannies to drop - msp trannies are built a little tougher than a stock protege unit

every 1,500 miles i change my oil with 10w30 mobil 1 synthetic and always after each track day...i've also upgrade my tranny fluid to valvoline synpower 75w90 which increases smoothness

after about 5k miles with the stock clutch it was slipping badly so i got an ACT HD-SS clutch and the 15lb msp flywheel which helped get rid of any

i also upgraded to awr motor mounts (manual) b/c with the fs-de being such a low end torquey engine a turbo only exaggerates down low power and the unfortunate side effect of wheelhop

Andy's a great guy for those who want to start out reliable...i've been boosted for 1 1/2 now with over 20 abusive track days on my car on top of it being my daily driver...since you are in norva send me a pm and maybe we can meet someplace so you can get a look at the setup i'm running
