sleepless nights...

i have to admit that i'm still comparison shopping and want to know what others cars you all considered before going with the P5? My current ride is a 97 nissan 200 se w/ 124,000 miles on it and it still runs solid and has never let me down. Only problem is that it's got no handling and no acceleration. So now that i'm out of school and want to help turn the economy around, i've been checking out the p5, nissan spec V, VW jetta GLI, and acura RSX (but no WRX b/c i think they are too ugly...i don't care about hp that much!). Did anyone else have sleepless nights trying to decide what car? ...anyone change their mind and why? i might get flamed b/c this is a mazda enthusiast site....but i'd rather get flamed then waste the 17 to 23k i'm gonna spend for my next car!
;)

If you can afford a WRX, wait for the 2004 model, they are awesome (there are pics in off-topic). Otherwise, I'd choose the P5 or the Golf. The Nissan is just too ugly. The RSX is not too bad, if you get the Type S. I really like my P5, it's got very good handling and braking. Some say it's underpowered, but it's good for me, it's no drag car but it can still accelerate enough. After a couple 1000 miles of break-in you can "feel" about 10 more HP.

If you have any specific question don't hesitate!

Same opinion as Yello_Pro5, but the RSX is not a choice I would make since this car shares the same chassis as the Civic, and man is it bad.

I can't explain it, but synthetic oil made a huge difference in noise levels (not that they are high to start with).

Only thing to consider, the P5 is not good in the fuel economy dept.. I still can't get better than 33.6mpg (Imperial gallon that is). Next stop at the dealer, I'll ask questions and try to have this "fixed".

Except for minor things, I'm VERY satisfied with this car, best choice out there in this price range. Go for it!

What is the conversion from an Imperial to an American gallon? I thought they were the same?!

I considered the Pontiac Vibe GT due to the horsepower advantage, and nearly bought one. I strayed back to the true faith :) and bought the Protege5 because neither the financing nor color (damn gray body cladding) were to my standards. Plus, the Mazda shifted and handled so superior it was sick. I drove a bunch of other cars but the Vibe/Matrix was about all that came close to getting my buck.

The Sentra Spec V is powerful this is true. It is also heavy, handles like a slab of concrete on a roller skate IMO and looks like a mutated Saturn four door. Same goes for the ass ugly WRX. The Golf GTI was rickety, stiff riding and notchy on the shifter. I don't know about the Jetta, but like I said in another post, my educated opinion on Volkswagens is that they have an inverse price/quality relationship. Price has gone up while quality has gone down. Volkswagen has gone from a "people's car" to a "pseudo-luxury car". Volkswagen has spent more money and time on image and demographics that they seem to have lost thier original market and identity. I think that in the long run this will hurt them. For Volkswagen to build this V12 ultra-luxury Phaeton in an effort to compete with Mercedes or Rolls Royce - for God's sake, why? And in the end, people with cash aren't going to the cocktail parties to brag about owning a Volkswagen while the neighbors show off the new Lexus or Benz.

Sorry to get off topic, but I think that Volkswagens are fairly overrated. Repair histories and the like from recent years do back this up. The salesman even admitted to me when my friend was looking at cars, "hey, that car you drove your friend in with, that's nice than anything we got here." Point 1 for Mazda :)

YAWN ... READ ME WRITE ... ROAR!!

I test drove these throughout the year before making a decision on the MP3 (so very pre-November 2001 test drives). Style was number one factor in decision making, PRICE was close number two, performance three then color. All four had to be just right for me ... or close to just right for me in order for me to be totally happy with the car. I'm still 95% giddy about owning my MP3 today... 5% is that depressing lack of turbo and LSD the Mazdaspeed has.

Eclipse GT (silver) - extremely cheap arse interior quality for almost $25K... otherwise this was on my short list of cars to buy since the torque it displayed made me smile:).

Subaru 2.5RS (blue) - (WRX was not yet here) I took my bike down to the dealership and actually tried to fit it inside one of the sporty blue 2.5RS model. Didn't fit so didn't seem worth what they wanted (I forgot how much they quoted me). Generally if the cars have similar performance, I prefer a four doors car over a two doors one.

Celica GT-S (silver) - Really small and not useful to me except to drive fast... needed a car that could carry my mountain bike...plus, this one was just too small for an only car...the interior was top notch though, best of the bunch in my list. Oh! oh! It was also too loud... whiny.

Subaru WRX (don't remember what color I test drove) - Test drove this ASAP after it was available at dealership. Price and then ultimately STYLE (didn't like the "Neon" look one bit) pushed me away from this car. More of style than price because there were quite a few friends who were pushing for me to get this car. I slept at nights thinking if I bought this car, how I would have to actually look at it everyday. I either force myself to like the style or regret it at the back of my mind each time I look at it... I wanted to avoid having this kind of doubt about my car (I did not plan on a huge budget for aftermarket parts such as body kits for a new car ... especially for an entire new WRX headlight/front end design). VERY sweet performance though.

'99 - '00 Honda Si - I really wanted a new car and could only find USED Si. It would have been a good bang for the buck performance car just like our MP3s. A friend drives one, so I didn't have to go test drive it at the dealership.

RSX Type-S (RED/Maroon demo) - For the price @ approx $25K+, I was not happy with the power... my butt meter did not feel a 200 hp engine even when I pushed it near redline. Couldn't get the sub to work for the demo car so that turned me off too. At the time the RSX was JUST released, but they had a sales person who was very knowledgeable about it already... impressive.

A friend of mine drives a '99 M3 and told me to check out USED Bimmers at the time (before I saw the MP3). I live down south and the BMW dealership is up north. Just for the heck of it both of us went to the dealership to see what they had that I could possibily afford. Nothing, but I think we got there late that day and the dealership was closing for the evening... so I wasn't able to find a sales person for a test drive of any Bimmer on the lot... we even got locked in the parking lot for a good 10-15 minutes before one of the person in charge of locking up noticed us stuck inside and let us out. Anyways, too far a drive for further interests, so gave up the idea of owning a Bimmer after that day.

Nissan SpecV - I don't think it was out yet, so I actually did not get to test drive it... and still haven't. I thought about this car, but after seeing it in the magazine I thought it was too "Mustang" looking with no style (i.e. bodykit like the MP3).

Mazda MP3 (only yellow, blue was not available at either dealerships) - One day took my old 323 to the shop for some repair and saw a yellow MP3 sitting right outside the showroom. My jaws dropped and I spent a good deal of time that morning drooling over the car. I didn't immediately get that one, because of $200 they charged for a strip of sticker acroos both sides of the car. Saw another one up north Austin and bought it right after I test drove the car. I had decided to just give up trying to stick my mountain bike INSIDE the car and go for a roof rack. Got a nice roof rack a few weeks later I think. Right, my "yellow" mountain bike played a TINY role in me wanting this YELLOW car. :D

ITR - A 2000 Yellow Integra Type R sitting outside the Acura dealership ($24K). Well, this ITR I saw was AFTER I bought my MP3 ... I went along with friends to watch them test drive the RSX Type S. I tried not kicking myself for not waiting a bit longer before buying the MP3 though and told myself it was a USED vehicle and priced around $25K compared to my $18K. (also, I never liked the headlights, in general, from the last gen Integra... Type R is the exception since everything else about it compensates for the poor taste in mini-headlight design in my opinion)

I envy the Mazdaspeed car, but I don't regret owning this MP3 one single bit. Color would have played a bigger than-expected role for me to decide on what car to get and I don't particularly drool over the orange or black colors. I wouldn't buy black since I live in the hot State of Texas, I'm quite sure of that..... dunno about the orange one, but it would not have been impossible to say no to with that turbo sitting inside.

**YAWN** HAHAHA!!! Writing all this is a LOT better than counting sheeps before going to sleep! (thumb)

For me it was the best decision I made. Here in Puerto Rico the price is higher but is the best you can get.
Like other guys, I test different cars and neither of them look and drive like my MP5.
I almost buy a WRX, but it does not have moon roof, neither all the extras of the interiors and exteriors. The only thing that I love about the WRX was the handling and the power. The price was another factor, here the WRX cost like $30,000 (compared with my MP5 that cost $20,000) and there are only two dealers that sell them.
What I love of my MP5 is the aggressive look, the body kit, the handling and the interior illumination. You will love it too, I am sure.

1 US gallon = 3.785 litres
1 imperial gallon = 4.546 litres
1 km = .6214 mille (so 100km/h = 62.14mph)

Milleage, in imperial gallon, should be around 38mpg, I only get 33.6 and this sucks. My 2000 Civic can do 43mpg (but it ain't fun to drive).

ouch..numbers...
My P5 gets fantastic mileage. I did almost a whole 600-mile trip between 80-95 mph. The car averaged exactly 29.3mpg(American) the whole way. If I had slowed down for drag, it would have been MUCH higher.
When I did a one hour commute at about 50-65mph, I averaged 33-34 on the open stretch, and about 31 overall, including city driving (of which there wasnt much).
The P5 is underpowered only in numbers. My manual is very responsive, and truly drives -- with no suspension modifications -- like a good Auto-X car. throw on stiffer rear sway and front anti-roll bars, and the car is unstoppable. The MSP (Mazdaspeed) takes on the likes of BMW and Porsche in the corners (and is then whupped in the straight line:)).
I still feel, after over 1 year of owning it, it is a good car. And I STILL get pleasure from pulling it around corners, every day to and from work, and all over the place on the weekends.
