SkyActiv-X may not reach US shores

I read they want to revive the wankle engine using it to recharge the battery in a hybrid.

Since the CX-5 is their bread-and-butter (meaning Mazda sells more CX-5s worldwide than all their other models combined), they will be very careful (meaning very conservative) in making wholesale changes to the lineup. I too have read about Mazda instituting a hybrid (CX-3 or CX-30) at some point in the not-too-distant future. Possibly Toyota's hybrid system?
That's the rumor. That's a big motivation behind the partnership they've built. I believe they've so stated in their financials.

What would the advantage to that be? Less space? Less weight?

I recall the ads: "And the Mazda goes HMMMMMMMMMM...."

Yes and yes.
Mazda has said that the range extender would be the size of a shoebox.
And as it's acting as a generator, they can make it run at optimal rpm at all times.

There is a big write up on Wankle engines on Wikipedia. Mazda has a lot of experience with them. They do better running at certain RPMs.
