2002 P5
I have a 2002 protege5 and I was wanting to put skunk 2 coilovers on and just wondering if anybody has them on there car and how it rides and how low the car will sit.

I heard that they go pretty low. There have been controversy over skunk2's or ground control coilovers. From what Iv'e read on this forum, the Ground controls are better. Just search for skunk2 coilovers and you will probably end up with a hundred threads to read. I read almost all of them, and then made up my mind of what I wanted. I wanted skunk2's from when I got the car, but dont want poping sounds and a very harsh ride. So I went with goldline springs.

if you want coilovers, get the real kind, not the sleeve type like skunk2 or ground control. I had a set of skunk2 on my car. It was real low on stock 14's, and ride was extremely harsh. With 18"wheels it was still pretty low and the ride was real harsh. scrapping everything. Also they made this stupid popping noise, i took them off my car and got myself some lowering springs.

i also had the skunk2's and then switched to springs, now i run KYB struts with H&R springs and the ride is much better.

I've had my Skunk2s on for so long now that they are now permanently fused in one place, i.e. non-adjustable. Still on stock struts too!

How long have you rode the KYB's? I hear that they fail prematurely when you put lowering springs on them.

id go with springs if you want lowered look and a comfortable drive. unless you plan on doing car shows coilovers usually better for shows. everyone always complains skunk2 coilovers are harsh ride on this forum. in my opinion coilovers in general are kinda bumpy ride.

Good to know. Thanks. Might also be a make model issue as I heard of the problem with Toyotas.

i have skunk2 coilovers on my car now for two years.. they pop a little now and then but i fixed that with some homemade spacers.. they will slam the car if you like, mine is normaly tucked an 1/2in in the rear and 1/4 mabey in the front.. the fronts are 3/4 the way down and the rears are 1/2.. now im on the winter set up with the rear fully rasied and the front up a 1/2 inch.. ill tell you now that the coils fully rasied are about 1in lower that stock front and about 2 inches in the rear.. im still on the P5 shocks, though i had the msp shocks on for a short while.. the ride was a little better with the msp shocks but the shock tube is a little longer so you cant lower the car any without rideing on the bump stops..now back on the P5 shocks an it rides fine to me, though it can get bouncey at times.. iv been driving cars with race springs for 12 years now so im used to it.. i like the car low, i can tell a differance in the control, stablity, and grip at max driving on backroads and autox..added the AWR 21.5mm rear sway bar and the corners like a dream on my 215/45/16 azenis.. i think the skunk2s are a good for the money if your looking to balance the car and drive it hard, like autox.. if your looking to lower the car and just have a near factory ride than springs and maybe shocks would be the way to go.

some pics of the car in winter mode, dirty, snowy, as it sits as of yesterday.. the rears are all the way up and the fronts are 3/4 or so the way up.. the tires are taller so its tucked still, but not so much if the factory 16s are on.. those 15s are old maxima wheels, lots of offset, so much so that i have to camber the s*** out of the rear just to clear.. thick rugged looking wheel, rally style :).. still gets around fine on coilovers in weather like this as long as thers not over 10" or something..
