i didn't mask off anything ... just make sure you use LOW PRESSURE water to rinse the foam off. don't spray directly at wires. if needed, use a damp cloth to get into those hard to reach spots.

never tried simple green, but it looks pretty good. does it come in a foam spray or is it like a pasty cleaner? i use the Canadian Tire Motomaster brand engine foam. works great!

Simple Green comes in regular spray bottles and jugs. It's very cheap and is also available in large quantities at those "warehouse" stores like Sam's and Costco.

BTW, it's not actually an engine cleaner, it's a general purpose degreaser handy for all sorts of messes.

Personally, I dilute in with 1/3 water most of the time.

I tried with simple green but It didn't clean well..
Do I have to scrub the dirty areas?

I didn't scrub at all.

I take it that Simple Green is OK on plastic? If one is afraid of spraying water on the engine, can you just use a cloth and wipe down the engine with Simple Green or will that not work?

I doubt any of the newer Protegs have this problem, but I've heard that power steering fluid is good for restoring rubber & plastic parts to their original color/luster, and helps prevent them from getting brittle.
