side markers

Hey guys, has anyone modified the wiring on the speed so that those amber sidemarker stay on when the lights are on and blink when the turn signal is on?

(talking about the small oval amber lights on the front quarter panels right in front of the door jams)

If so, how?

Thanks in advance!

I would say get some relay and run it off of your parking lights and run a positive wire from the battery through the relays. Or you can just do it the lazy way and just run a direct wire from the parking lights in the front to the side markers.

I dont think its legal to have those on all the time.

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated!

But why would you not think its legal?

Thanks again!

Probably the same reason why underglow is. Its a distraction to other drivers. You know how cops are.

"OMG his side markers are distracting me by signaling a left turn."

hahaha I crack myself up. I plan to do this too. :D

was anyone successful on the rewire.... if how did you do it and which wires did you tag. Thanx

Ahhh, it is not illegal. I have done it on my old P5 and my MSP. I even replaced the sidemarket lights to SuperWhite bulbs.

Here is how you do it for the MSP.

a) Take a 4ft length of black 12-gauge wire and a 4ft lengh of red 12-gauge wire, and using electrical tape, wrap it completely leaving 4" at either end.

b) Carefully, remove the sidemarker assembly and "cut" the factory wires.

c) Using the new wire harness you just made, attach the black and red wires to the sidemarker light.

d) Fish the harness assembly up over the wheel wells to the rear of the headlights.

e) Using the black wire, tap the black wire on the parking light. This is ground.

f) Using the red wire, tape the green/black wire on the parking light, this is +12V.

g) Furthermore, if you want your parking lights (corner orange ones) to act the same, wire in parallel.

When the parking lights are on, so are the sidemarkers and the corner parking lights.

When you have the parking lights off, and turn signal, the center parking light, the outer parking light, and the sidemarker light blinks in unison.

When you have the parking lights on, and turn signal, the center parking light blinks - and then alternates with the outer parking light/sidemarker light in unison (similiar to GM cars).

Definitely a touch, not ricey, and saved my a$$ more than once on the highway.

Here in Illinois where we have Camaro's and Pontiac's running around making a bunch of noises, the cops don't care much bout' that kind of stuff. They do concentrate on rice burners, and I have been stopped with prior cars because of color of lights, etc. As long as the light is white or yellow, and not red or blue, and the distance from the front edge of the car to the light is greater than 30" it is legal. Look at buses, trucks, etc. Oh yeah, look at the new 2004 TL. It's sidemarker light illuminates a dim yellow all the time, then when turning, blinks like my setup.

Thanks, Brian
Just one Question.... When you are connecting the new harness to the sidemarker light which color goes to what, I have a green/black and black on the sidemarker itself... Thanx for your wisdom...

Sorry to be a pain ,also when you say parking light you mean the one that blinks in the front middle...sorry just want to be sure.. Thanx for your help and time..MJG

XodusPhD:
the way to wire that light is to have both wires go to the positive side of the front turn signal wire..it will stay lit but it will turn off and on when you use the turn signal light you dont need a relay..

Front middle (center) parking light.

Green/Black front middle center to red to green/black sidemarker.

Black front middle center to black to black sidemarker.

---- also to run orange side parking lights, cut wires like sidemarkers -----

Green/Black from side parking lights to red wire (goes to sidemarker)

Black from side parking lights to black wire (goes to sidemarker)

Hope this helps!

Even in Europe, it' only blinks when the turn signal is on :D

Why would this be illegal? Dualies have sidemarkers lights on their rear fenders and that is not deemed distracting to other drivers. In fact it is required by DOT law. In europe they have a fog light on the back of the car so I don't see why it would be illegal there either. When I was over there I saw plenty of Benzs, Opels, and Bimmers that had the sidemarker constantly lit. I remember because it was the first time I started seeing the functionality of them because of the way they drive over there.

Who cares if it's legal or not, because no cop is smart enought to ever figure that out as long as you keep it orange (or maybe white)

Personally I don't see how it'd be illegal since the Protege5 has that damn bumper lens on the side thats always on, and the turn signal sidemarker is only 2 feet away. But like I said, just do it.

how hard is it to pull the side markers off? does it need alot of force or just to be pryed off?

3 seconds with bare hands per side.

On drivers side, in front of the sidemarker light, from the front of the car side push to the rear of the car (actually slides) and pops out. No biggie.

oh sweet im glad you said it slides, cus my ass would be out there trying to pry it stright out. thanks for the info
