I know what you're thinking, "There's 5 threads on this subject."

Not really -- I want to see a pic of where you trimmed+rewelded the 4-5 inches off the Mazdaspeed exhaust to make it fit on your P5. I don't need to see any more pics of how the tip fits on your car now that its cut. I want to see the cut and weld area!

I too wanna see this... thanks for starting this thread grindMARC, it should be very informative

dang, the upload feature is not up, i had some from my friend but i cant upload them at the moment

Alright, the MSP muffler arrived last night and seeing that no one is posting pics for me, I'll just ask.

What section of piping behind the muffler are you guys trimming? Is it the narrower pipe that comes right off the muffler or on the fatter section that makes up the oval tip?

id assume the smaller side
Yeah I would think so too, but there is a little brace that's welded to the top of the muffler and attaches to the end of that first section of smaller piping. If I trim it there, the brace will either need to be ditched all together or will need to be welded onto the oval tip -- changing the clearance a bit.

I'll try to dig up a pic.

Here's a pic...

looks like id cut the smaller diameter pipe AND the brace. you will have to weld the brace back together once u shorten the small pipe. id also shorten the brace plate too. maybe u can bend them so that u dont need to relocate them...

just how i see it to be done. i would steer clear from the tip entirely because im not sure if its a solid thing piece or made up of multiple sections inside...

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm starting to think that if I cut the smaller one (notice the bend) it will change the angle and location of where the tip sticks out under the bumper cover. There's not alot of room down there. The inside of the tip looks like a single piece. I think I should slice it out of the tip (which is perfectly straight), just so that I can be sure the tip will fit right at the opening on the bumper cover.

here ya go..pics of mazdaspeed exhaust on my P5, cut about 5" shorter and rewelded with stainless..looks and sounds good

I was thinking the same thing when I received my msp exhaust. But the offset of the smaller diameter pipe doesn't reflect the cutout on our P5 - a couple of members who I've PM'd have confirmed that. The brace is coming off, and there is no need to reweld it from what I can see.

The only concern I have is finding a shop that can work with stainless well. A couple of the modified exhausts i've seen seem to be rusting at the welded joints, or where there was splatter from the welding rod.

ya ther was some splatter, not much as you can see..those pic where taken right after it was put on...a little light sanding, wet sand and a dremal tool with buffing wheel, now iv got it looking perfect and the weld itself is also looking nice.. no rust or discolor as of yet, its be three months (and yes you want a stainless weld!!!) the brace isnt needed but the guy wanted to make it look good and thers no rubbing or hitting the bumper at all!! the muffler moved the power band up a little, a little bit of tq lost in the lower rpms but the car revs out much better and continues to make power..the sound is nice, not loud and has a deep peerrr to it.. all and all im very happy with it...oh and i reset the ECU a few days after the exhaust, it seemed to help a little as well..

You rock, man! Thanks alot. Just in time too. I'm headed over to the custom muff shop tomorrow morning. Oh, and great tip about the stainless weld. I'm not sure I would have thought of that.

Look for a post on Monday with pics of mine!

great, sorry it took so long, the flim from those pics wasnt in the batch i had developed. found it under my seat after discovering thers no muffler pics.. so i hope that helps, looking forward to the pics, i also notice the the mazdaspeed tip is differant than mine, so im looking forward to see what it looks like on the car!!
